When your nickname is the instrument you MASTER than you should take special note of his accomplishments.  Johnny "Hammond" Smith is one of the finest organists of the late fifties and early sixties.  In the early seventies, Johnny dropped the Smith from his name and went by Johnny Hammond when he recorded a slew of Jazz/Funk outings.  REST assured that this sessions is nothing like his later recordings and this is PURE SOUL JAZZ!!  

This is the most difficult album to find in SMITH's archives!  The NEW JAZZ label has slipped through the cracks of in demand labels desired by JAZZ aficionados.  BLUE NOTE and PRESTIGE have taken center stage but the NEW JAZZ label has a high quality that is difficult to match.  Though the NEW JAZZ label is a subsidiary of PRESTIGE, the NEW JAZZ label has a higher quality of soul jazz!! With Johnny "Hammond" Smith's organ out front, his side musicians supply a FANTASTIC backing.  Thornel Schwartz is on guitar and is flawless!  He has been Jimmy Smith's sideman for many years and you can see why he was in such demand.  George Tucker on bass and Leo Stevens on drums rounds out the quartet.  Two Smith originals on this tight session are "That Good Feelin" & "Puddin". CLASSIC SOUL-JAZZ!!  Comes with my highest RECOMMENDATION!!  ENJOY this RARE treat!  GOOD LUCK!
