JOHNNY OTIS SHOW UK Capitol MONO 1st CLEAN ISSUE Rock and Roll Doo Wop
The Johnny Otis Show.
Original 1958 UK pressed EMI Capitol mono LP, T 940.
Earliest heavy duty pressing with dark turquoise and silver labels and 1N/1N matrix suffixes
Not mint but a generally better than usual issue of this LP which often turns up in a fairly sorry and tatty state.
Note that any dark marks to the vinyl surface in the photo are merely reflections.
Spider trail marks around the spindle areas indicates a few plays, but not excessively so. The labels are clean and undefaced. The playing surfaces still have a very good gloss although display a number of fine hairlines and light scuffs. There are no deep marks or scratches however.
Playback is a solid VG, strictly graded. Some occasional light crackle and the occasional isolated soft tick, but this infrequent. Track 3, Side 2, displays a few soft consecutive ticks, but this not overbearing. The surfaces are underlyingly quiet and not noisy. The sound is bright, clean and free of distortion.
Note that before play testing the LP I gave it a cursory wipe with a slightly dampened cleaning cloth. Although the LP was not overly grubby it did display some dusting and is after all well over fifty years old. After playback I did notice a few specks of debris dislodged by the stylus and can only speculate that there is room for further improvement in the sound quality with a more thorough cleaning.
Inner sleeve is original heavy duty poly-lined "Emitex" and in close to EX condition.
Fully laminated external sleeve is just short of VG, but still hold up well with most extant issues, as the construction is very flimsy and prone to wear, tearing and loss. The laminated front panel is very clean and bright with no significant laminate peel and just a touch of ringwear impression. The rear foldover flaps are undamaged. The rear panel has some age toning and discolouration but is otherwise remains clean and free of marks. A just short of one inch tear to bottom left hand edge of rear of sleeve with slight fraying and just a small spot of loss. Towards the right hand centre a small piece of the surface has lifted and taken with it an area of around half an inch of loss to spine lettering. Bottom right corner of sleeve (when viewed from front) has a small split with associated diagonal creasing and whitening at same area. Tips gently worn but not excessively rounded. Else edges in fairly good order and entry side is mostly acceptably clean and unfeathered.
In summary a somewhat better than average example of this classic early UK LP however.
