JOHNNY VANELLI -- My Song / Sweet Marjorene -- ex. rare, original late 1960's (??) U.S. 45 RPM single, Demo pressing (?). This is an apparently completely unknown 45 by local Southern California artist Johnny Vanelli, whose "Seven Days Of Loving You" (also on the Pre-Vue label) is a highly sought-after Northern Soul rarity. Vanelli was employed as a courier at an aircraft factory and part-time singer, who hooked up with a co-worker who wrote "Seven Days of Loving You" and pressed it up on his own private label, Pre-Vue; the song sank without a trace in 1968 but was revived by Northern Soul fans a few years later. A-side here "My Song" is the winner, a heartfelt Pop-White Soul ballad in a late 1960's Paul Anka vein that builds to a powerful vocal climax, good stuff. B-side "Sweet Marjorene" is forgettable attempt at Neil Diamond-style uptempo Pop. I can't find any information on this but I'm guessing date to be circa 1968-1969. This is apparently the only copy of the 45 that's ever surfaced, and the label is gold whereas the regular Pre-Vue label was green -- so I'm likewise guessing this may be a Demo pressing and that the 45 was never officially released. In generic white sleeve. Record: VG-VG, light surface wear on both sides, light wear on A-side label, on Pre-Vue private label, U.S. press.
