Second Winter, Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia, originally had the distinction of being the only album in rock history that was a three-sided double LP. Musically, 35 years after its original release, Second Winter is still an oddity. Issued by Sony's Legacy division, the set has been painstakingly remastered, and expanded by bonus cuts and an entire disc of live material. It's too bluesed-out to be a pure rock record, and too psychedelically dimensioned to be a pure blues album. Tommy Shannon calls it "power blues." And as for whatever else passed for blues-rock at the time -- Cream, Hendrix, Canned Heat, etc. -- forget it. This set is a whole different animal. Cut in Nashville with all tracks begin done within one or two takes, the energy of Second Winter is undeniable. The sheer range of styles Winter assaulted in his restless quest is astonishing too. The set begins with a blues-funk cover of Percy Mayfield's classic "Memory Pain," that adds a wealth of rock sonics to the mix. The same goes for the gritty originals like "I'm Not Sure," with its screaming electric mandolin, and the album's closer "Fast Life Rider." The latter two are textured with Edgar's stellar piano work. Then there's the album's centerpiece, the signature cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" with its burning, gut bucket slide work and Winter's bona fide revival of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Trad Delta blues makes its appearance here as well in "I Love Everybody," as does jump jazz in "I Hate Everybody," both of them with Winter's raucous edge.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY THOM JUREK, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
This awesome 3-sided double album was a proverbial peak of his career and one of the truly most memorable albums of all time. The album is remarkable for the inclusion of five covers: two by Little Richard, one by Chuck Berry, one by Dylan, and a phenomenal reading of Percy Mayfield's classic "Memory Pain". A must-have! Track listing: Memory pain - I'm not sure - The Good love - Slippin' and slidin' - Miss Ann - Johnny B. Goode - Highway 61 revisited - I love everybody - Hustled down in Texas - I hate everybody - Fast life river.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The records come in poly-lined inner sleeves, which have - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(c) The records are pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)
- The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 2 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters, each).
- Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams
- Inside gatefold has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No wrinkles or creases
