THIS ITEM COMES FROM THE INCREDIBLE, SINGLE-OWNER COLLECTION WE ACQUIRED A WHILE AGO, IN WHICH ITEMS ORIGINALLY BOUGHT BY THE OWNER FROM THE MID-1970s to THE MID-2010s WERE KEPT STILL SEALED IN A NEAR-LABORATORY, TIME-CAPSULE CONDITIONS AND IN PRACTICALLY CLIMATE- AND HUMIDITY- CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.  CONDITIONS OF SOME OF THESE ITEMS RANGE FROM IMPECCABLE TO TRULY UNBELIEVABLE. SOME OF THESE BEAUTIFUL MUSEUM PIECES LOOKED SO PERFECT THAT WE HAD TO REINSPECT AND RE-EXAMINE THEM A FEW TIMES TO MAKE SURE THEY OUR EYES ARE NOT DECEIVING US.

Starting with her previous album The Hissing of Summer Lawns Joni started going in a much more fusion direction for lack of a better word. This album which came out in 77 has her new sound in full bloom.

Joni contracted some of Jazz fusion's pioneers to back her on this album, Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter and drummer Peter Erskine who were all members of the ground breaking fusion band Weather Report at this time. In my opinion the strongest tunes are the first five tunes. Also track 8 the title track is also pretty good. When you listen to these tunes you can't help but notice the beautiful fret less bass lines of Jaco Pastorius which offer most of the melodic content, the bass is also mixed the most promeniant of all the instruments on most of the tracks.

I'll talk about a few of my favorite musical moments before I conclude this review. Track 1 Cotton Avenue Overture is a bluesy piece that's pretty sparse with only acoustic guitar, several tracks of overdubbed bass that sounds like a bass choir. For all the bass players and bass lovers reading this take note, this tune and most of this album features Jaco doing lots of neat things thought totally unnatural for a bassist of the time. Track 2 is a great tune with a great melody played again by Jaco's bass and he even famously imitates a chicken squawking. Track 3 Jericho is probably my favorite tune on the album, a beautiful ballad with great lyrics and beautiful playing. My only problem with the song is its too short. I highly recommend this to fans of fusion and singer songwriter stuff. I also recommend Joni's other albums that feature Jaco Hejira, The live Shadows and Light & Mingus. They're all killer!

Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The records come in their original, custom, inner sleeves, which are UNIQUE to this album (we can see them through the cutout notch)

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
