This is the shining peak for Joni Mitchell. Before this album, she was considered an emotionally honest spokesperson for the singer-songwriter movement. After this album, she started a slow dive into jazz introspection ending with a collaboration with Charles Mingus in 1979. And by 1980 she had exhausted the jazz side of her personality and more or less coasted through the rest of her career. Hissing Of Summer Lawns is the only recording in her canon that successfully blends both elements of her ever changing personal struggles. Her previous album Court And Spark still had a bit of innocence but a key member of her studio band (bassist Jim Hughart), suggested she hire jazz players because clearly that was the direction was heading. The following record, Hejira, is as stark and barren as the Canadian winters Joni experienced as a child. The lush orchestration and jarring juxtapositions are gone in favor of stripped down to the bone arrangements. While both albums are timeless, Hissing captures everything in one package.

In addition to the songwriting, she has left behind her soul baring confessional tone and instead takes an observational look at the decreasing moral fiber of 70's society. Alcoholism, philandering lovers, unhappily married couples all make an appearance here. But what makes Hissing Of Summer Lawns such a great listen is the presence of members of the L.A. Express and Crusaders. L.A. Express features her love interest and supreme drummer John Guerin. Guerin is mentioned several times in the gatefold sleeve and credits him for, among other things, "showing me where 1 was". Few albums from the 70's, demonstrate such personal and musical growth as HOSL.

Finally, it is highly suggested that this be played in full in one sitting. Selecting individual tracks is nearly impossible and will disrupt the sometimes elegant, sometimes jarring, flow of this masterpiece.

Is it difficult? Yes and no, depending on your perspective. To this writer, it is simply a complete artistic statement from a musician at the absolute top of her game.

47 years later this still stands as a near perfect example of greatness.

How cool it must be to be Joni Mitchell. Possessor of life's most fertile aesthetic palate, vocals that twist like a rattlesnake caught on a branch of a tree, how she immerses herself in musical drama, freely, without concern for her own sanity (John Hiatt eat your lower intestines out), taking herself to all points until she simply flips her emotions over to turn a beautiful September golden brown. Well, with Joni it’s simple, trauma she very much had to persevere with for so much of her life, gets recycled into older, wiser observer ‘The Boho Dance’, donning her latest robes for ‘In France They Kiss on Main Street’ Joni enjoys to the full her parting shot to all pretenders. Here on Parisienne soil, the truly liberated act and think as one. As different to ‘Blue’ as ‘Abbey Road’ is to ‘Rubber Soul’, Mitchell transforms all she touches into a glowing tribute to life’s very basic events; be they platonic love, isolation, embittered rage, all of which gradually succumb to Mitchell’s seductive swingy Jazzy drones secured in its harness by electric piano and devilishly good woodwinds that personified everything good 1975 had to offer.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
