JORGE BEN - TABUA DE ESMERALDA LP - 1974 ORIG PHILIPS BRAZIL - VINYL GOOD PLUS CONDITION / COVER VG CONDITION. Condition is used.
I am selling a few records from my personal collection. I am a big fan of Brazilian music and I own about 1000 Brazilian LP's. In my humble opinion this is the greatest Brazilian LP of all time, equaled only by Acabou Chorare by Os Novos Baianos, It was rated #6 by Rolling Stone in the top 100 Brazilian LP's of all time. Some of the most unusual, great, funky-swingy acoustic guitar-playing by Jorge on every track, supported by his phenomenal band Banda Ze Pretinho. The music is hard to describe, it is the author's own unique creation and it is amazing.
Please note that to avoid any confusion, I have revised this listing to conservatively rate this record as being in Good Plus condition. I have also added three additional photos of the record under a high intensity kitchen light to make sure that you can accurately see its condition. Many collectors would call this very good minus but I do not want to get into any debates. Despite these many scratches, it plays remarkably well, as described below.
What is most striking about this LP is its sound. It is a "hot stamper" and is an outstanding example of everything that vinyl has to offer as a medium. From the first song on side one forward, the music just soars off the grooves, with Dadi's bass lines interposing Jorge's guitar parts along with wonderful vocal harmonies and percussion. Just listen to the drum fills on the opening song. Wow. Incredible soundstage throughout to match Jorge's sometimes dreamlike ruminations on everything from cosmic astronauts to the a cosmic necktie. Although the LP is littered with many hairline scratches and one larger (non-feelable) one (see photo 8) and these produce some minor background noise with the occasional audible tick and pop, it plays remarkably well -- even stunningly well --with full spectrum sound, warmth, clarity and psychedelic stereo separation. A truly wonderful example of vinyl's durability.
The LP cover is actually quite nice-presenting, clean and glossy with no writing on the cover, a VG+ in many eyes, however, there is some moisture damage that has separated the carboard layers around the 3 o'clock position by the opening (see photo). I expect this can be repaired quite easily. As such, I am rating this cover a VG. Of note, this is the original '74 Serie Luxo (Luxury Series) edition with silver letters on the LP label, not to be confused with the white letter 1985 re-issue. The boys at the Philips plant in Sao Paulo really took great care when stamping this one. It is European-level vinyl quality. In summary, a bit banged up, but an opportunity to get an extremely rare, classic, great-sounding original Brazilian LP stateside at a price well below a VG+ or better copy.
