Together, José Cheta and José Cid (alone or with his legendary psychedelic group Quarteto 1111) have made 5 records. This is the last of them, from 1972, and one of the more difficult to find.
José Cheta was a Portuguese singer from Algarve, the southern part of Portugal known for its beaches. He led his own garage group in the late 60’s, the Black Rose, and then headed for Lisbon, where he would eventually lead a successful career during the 1970’s. The finest period of it, however, was the one spent with José Cid, who wrote some songs specially for him.
What you find here are four beautiful psych folk songs, two of them penned by José Cid himself. “Transição” [Transition] has a tune reminiscent of Quarteto 1111, with fantastic keyboard work by Cid, while “Vem Ouvir Esta Cantiga” [Come Hear This Song] adds flute to the sound. The two other songs, “Mar Tempestade” [Sea Storm] and “Quero Falar de Ti” [I Want To Talk About You] have music by José Cheta, who co-wrote some of the earlier records’ songs with José Cid.
This EP, like many of the music recorded in Portugal in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, was the only way that artists had to express their musical visions – LP’s were a much coveted prize, and only Quarteto 1111, Filarmónica Fraude, Petrus Castrus and one or two more big names got to record one. This fact makes Portuguese EP’s much collectable, as their songs cannot be found anywhere else. José Cheta had, however, a LP under his name, but it is a compilation of some of his singles and EP’s and not an original studio record. Don’t lose your chance of getting this never before seen relic!
