The legendary Joy Division appearance at the Leigh Rock Festival 1979 gets a substantial vinyl release here, pressed up on impressive 180g black vinyl, limited to just 1000 copies in total. Festival sets by A Certain Ratio, Teardrop Explodes and Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark are usually bundled in with the Joy Division performance, but on this deluxe edition (each copy hand numbered and enshrined in a gatefold PVC housing) you get nothing but the Salford band all the way. Even though fans are likely to have already encountered this recording in some form or other it's never sounded nearly so good as it does here. The recordings are brutal and raw, capturing a muscular, uncompromising set, but this edition doesn't seem to suffer so heavily from the hollowed out, noise reduction-plagued sound that's so prominent on the digital formats. Renditions of tracks like 'She's Lost Control' and 'Digital' (which benefits from a staggeringly lively performance) resonate powerfully, and seem far-removed from the icy, santising perfectionism of Martin Hannett studio. Undoubtedly, no amount of fancy gatefold packaging and heavyweight vinyl can dampen the effects of the occasionally impenetrable original recordings - at times it sounds like you're listening through a layer of porridge - but chances are, this is as close as you'll come to a definitive version of the concert.
