Joy Division : Unknown Pleasures A2/B2 3rd Press 1980

This is about as good as it gets!  This third pressing from late 1980 quite simply plays 'as new' from start to finish with no interference.  As always I have played every track in full so as to provide the 'complete' grade and the clarity, depth and power of the audio is spectacular!  This is clearly an album that was purchased and hardly listened to - the sonic quality confirms that and there is also barely any spindle wear.  It just could not play any better, the playback is STUNNING!  The vinyl is also visually stunning with no marking/scratches and this easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE pressing.

The textured G & L cover is in fantastic condition as is the inner printed sleeve, they have been so well preserved.

This is known as a third press because TOWN HOUSE is stamped on the run outs and the rest of the matrix info is etched.  It has the A2/B2 matrix and the printed inner sleeve has square corners.

Visual description

The vinyl is in superb condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Under a strong light I can only find a small number of faint sleeve removal hairlines and the ridged labels are unmarked with barely any spindle wear.  Visually stunning!

Play grading

The percussive/bass intro on 'Disorder' is perfect with no 'background' and it continues to play with superb quality from that point on.  The clarity and power of the audio suggests the record has hardly been played - each note is so sharp and precise and there is no 'muddiness' to the sound at all.  Stunning!  There is just one minor static tick on the fade out but this has to be graded as Mint such is the quality of the recording.

The intro on 'Day Of The Lords' is faultless and Curtis' opening vocal is equally as good.  It continues to play with sublime quality and one thing that really stands out is Hook's strong deep bass sound.  It is so 'clean' and precise and that is because the vinyl has been so well preserved over the last 42+ years.  Right to the final note it plays incredible well with no intrusion on the audio and Mint is again deserved.

The quiet build up intro on 'Candidate' has no 'background' can you believe and it continues in the same way with...no interference.  This truly is audio of the highest calibre and so far there is has been zero intrusion.  Each note can be heard perfectly and again the only grade I can give is Mint the playback is STUNNING!

'Insight' of course has one of the quietest intros known to man (!) and yet the clarity is on another level!  A handful of barely audible dust ticks maybe but it plays like it has never been on a turntable before!  This standard is kept up as the music comes in and there is no let up in quality as it continues.  I expected this vinyl to play well but not this well!!  From start to finish this is another Mint track.

'New Dawn Fades' ends the side with unbelievable quality once more.  The entire classic intro is 'as new' and Curtis' distinctive opening vocal has no 'background' either.  There is no inner groove distortion on the more powerful second half and I am confident in grading this as Mint also - not even the percussive end section has any interference - what a side!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Without wishing to sound repetitive the intro on 'She's Lost Control' is perfect as is the rest of the track!  The sonic quality is so strong and clear and there is just nothing that detracts from the audio.  A classic Mint track.

The bass/percussive intro on 'Shadowplay' is phenomenal!  Sumner's guitar crashes in with perfect sound and from then on plays to the same high end standard with, you guessed it, no interference.  The power and depth of the audio is breath-taking and Mint is again deserved.  Not even a dust tick on the fade out!

'Wilderness' plays with stunning quality from the get go.  Curtis' vocals are as strong and clear as ever and the instrumental sections, as you would expect by now, have lost none of their original sonic quality.  Mint and then some...

The intro on 'Interzone' is as superb as all the other ones (!) and the opening vocal is just as impressive.  Great power and definition throughout this track and not one iota of interference.  Mint

The quiet intro on 'I Remember Nothing' provides further evidence of a vinyl so well preserved - the clarity is amazing with literally no 'background' and the opening vocal is equally as good.  There are a couple of barely audible ticks on the next vocal which is incredibly the first 'background' on the entire album!  Although so quiet 'background' is not really the correct word!  It continues to play with STUNNING clarity which is all the more impressive when you consider how quiet the majority is.  Every section plays with exceptional quality and to the final note there is no interference.  An amazing Mint finish to this incredible 'clean' album.

In summary this classic album plays to a standard you so rarely find today.  Admittedly not a first pressing but it is a very early one nonetheless and the clarity of sound is just remarkable.  There cannot be many albums from 1980 that have literally no interference!  I cannot emphasise enough just how PERFECT the audio is and together with a very impressive cover this would add to any Near Mint / Mint collection.

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

The G & L textured cover is in superb condition with hardly any wear.  The top edge has only a couple of small rubs and the bottom edge is perfect as is the thin spine.  The corners are so close to perfect with no obvious wear and the opening edge is also so clean with just the bare minimum of handling wear.  The front cover is practically 'as new' with only a touch of light ringwear and 3/4 very small faint creases around the edges and the back cover is just as good - a couple of tiny rubs next to the opening edge that is all.  A fantastic example overall.

The glossy inner sleeve with square corners is also in superb order with only minor ringwear as you would expect and hardly any creasing.
