This album is more English than tea and abowler hat! It is a lasting tribute to the late Kevin Ayres, who died atrue Rock’n’Roll death only a few weeks ago. (If you need to know more there’sloads on the net….) It was his first solo effort, recorded just after he leftthe Soft Machine, following an exhausting tour of America supporting the JimiHendrix Experience. It was released in November 1969, having been recordedbetween 17th June and 11th September 1969 at Abbey Road Studios for the newE.M.I. Harvest label.
It’s hard to define Kevin’s music as the ten tracks on thisalbum cover a huge range of styles, ranging from pastoral whimsy, through suavedecadent loucheness to the hard, complex jazz-rock of Soft Machine; whosemembers (and former school friends), Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge and HughHopper, back him collectively and individually throughout the record. There’seven one track in Malay for extra variety! The orchestration was undertaken bynoted Avant Garde composer DavidBedford, who went on to become a regular feature of Kevin’s touring ensemble.

I bought the album in 1969 from the legendary Musicland at44 Berwick Street Soho. The cover is in very good condition and the colours arestill bright. The seams and spine are ok too. The record is still in theoriginal inner sleeve, which is in good condition apart from some minorcreasing, but not enough to reach the actual disc. The record itself is cleanand glossy and plays well apart from some crackle between tracks thatunfortunately IS quite noticeable in the quiet passage at the start of Girl ona Swing, but vanishes after the first few bars and don’tdetract from the overall sound.
Even if you don’t have a record deck and can’t play it, this album is alovely piece of genuine memorabilia from a bygone time that changed the worldand would grace any collection. I’m not a dealer of any sort, but am justdownsizing and having to clear things out, so I’m starting it at a low price so a genuinecollector can enjoy it without paying rip off prices.
