Description

33 variations of a simple theme by a composer whose name, Goldberg, only lives on because Bach chose to use his little composition as the foundation for one of the most incredible pieces ever composed in any classical era, never mind the baroque era. Despite these two discs having separate catalogue numbers they are a pair and the liner notes on disc 1 actually continue mid sentence on disc 2. The looming, ominous yet obviously feminine carved sculpture by Jacob Epstein on the cover, with the black background, must be one of the best covers I’ve ever seen. Everything about this work is magnificent. It has a grandeur and importance about it. The pianist, Rosalyn Tureck, was cited by Glenn Gould as his only influence when it came to playing Bach. Both were masters.
