Brief Info: The seventh studio album by American folk singer Judy Collins, and for me anyway, her very very best. So-much-so, I regard this as one of the very best folk albums by a female vocalist ever. The track selection is brilliant with more quality versions of Dylan, Cohen and Robin Williamson (ISB). Can any version of the sublime Sandy Denny title song ever be matched? – well for me Judy’s version does. It also includes the Rolf Kempf song ‘Hello, Hooray’, later made famous by Alice Cooper. Her self-written song ‘My Father’ is also excellent. The album includes full backing of the highest quality, including Stephen Stills on guitars (incorrectly spelled as Steven on the inside cover), who she was dating at the time – Stills wrote his classic ‘Suite: Judy Blue Eyes’ based on this relationship. This copy appears hardly played, and in the rarer mono format, an album never easy to find in better conditions. The cover is very prone to all forms of wear and the record often heavily played and scratched from those here who initially bought the first issues. For those yet to discover this wonderful singer and that beautiful pure voice, there is no better place to start.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better for one that rarely wears well (the front especially). An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day, includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: With a stunning close-up of the young Judy and those famous blue eyes, this very dark cover cries out for laminate protection, but alas not to be. This gorgeous portrait now often ruined by heavy rubbing, fading, sticker tears and even ring wear. So a delight to offer this in such beautiful condition, it is the very best I have seen in years. Any hint of rubbing, creasing or blemishes tiny, very few and faint. This retains genuine fresh and immense dark colour and hardly aged at all. The black bar near the top left corner is correct and is a UK updated print plate obscuring probably American catalogue details.

Cover Back: In contrast, the back is much paler and is prone to grubbiness and ring wear, again this has little to fault as-seen. The owner of many years kept this inside a protective cover, thus the surfaces have not been exposed or touched for decades.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again it reminds of when made, any blemishes (traces of adhesive near the bottom edges) are natural from manufacture and show little under light.

Top Edges: Both straight with minimal hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, the white back edge has gentle traces of rubbing. The dark blue has patchy hints of enhancements from the previous fussy owner who did admit not buying the album from new. Such dark storage edges rarely escape some light wear and any cosmetic improvement to this edge has been quite tastefully done and neat and only seen viewed end-on. I would say this is the only blemishe per se to this 50-year-old cover and thus the conservative overall grading.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and very light. Record enters on the back edge, all are natural and not enhanced.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, most that surface are grubby, aged and worn. This one solid, straight with barely any compression, any discolouration to the white surface gentle and light. Folded a fraction off square, so the edges meet up very closely, but not quite parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and very well centred as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this highly unforgiving and wear-prone 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(+): a basic plain white unlined inner that has some corner crinkle and creasing. Two crisp neat windows and all edges intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. An album not always the best-pressed, but there is minimum hint of any mottle or impurities compared to several I have seen in the past, thus this delicate album plays very well with little unwanted. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: I am always delighted to play a copy of this album which I regard as Judy’s masterpiece, and it has been some time. It plays up to and mostly beyond it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Many have disappointed over the years, but this one is pressed to a higher standard and any contact blemishes are few and light with no inherent pressing rasps or sounds. Few available copies will outperform this original mono pressing significantly I feel sure. One little used and certainly not abused on those early heavy-tracking mono record players of the time. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a stereo system, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – that is something I can rarely state for this often quite quiet folk-rock album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – this has been a long-time favourite of mine for many, many years.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
