Juicy Lucy : Juicy Luicy (Vertigo Swirl 2nd Press 1Y1 / 2Y2)

This second pressing on the Vertigo label plays as close to 'new' as is possible, the clarity and sonic quality on both sides is outstanding.

The first press has 'A Philips Record Product' below VERTIGO on the label and this one does not have it making a second press.  However, if you want this album with Mint- quality audio then this is the one to own!  It is also the earliest second press as denoted by the matrix as below.

The gatefold is in excellent with very little of the shelf wear that you so often find.  The original 'swirl' inner is in great shape with no marking or side splits.

Visual grading

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen.  It has no marks or scratches and only a small number of faint sleeve removal hairlines and one radial line which has no affect on the stunning audio.  There is some spindle wear but not an excessive amount and the run out grooves and labels are super clean with no marking.  A superb example of such an early pressing!

Play grading  

'Mississippi Woman' has no obvious static on the intro and continues to play with superb clarity and depth.  There is no interference and each note can be heard with perfect precision.  Judging by how strong the audio is this has only been lightly played, the playback is fantastic!  Mint is a an honest assessment of the audio here, there isn't even any 'background' on the fade out.

'Who Do You Love' also plays with the same sublime quality and there are no clicks, pops, static or crackle.  A 'high octane' track and yet there is no distortion at all - it plays with incredible power and easily grades as Mint- again.

The sax intro on 'She's Mine / She's Yours' could not play any better, in fact the entire intro is 'as new'.  Once the vocal comes in there is no decrease in quality and from start to finish there is no interference.  Absolutely 100% stunning!  The clarity and power is outstanding and then the first fade out has no 'background' either.  The 'long' silent section is exactly that - silent!  The final instrumental section ends this raucous track in supreme style.  You know the grade!

Perhaps the first real test with this 50 year old vinyl is the quiet 'Just One Time' and I am pleased to say it passes with flying colours!  The mandolin intro is stunning, not even a dust tick, and it continues to play with exemplary audio and no interference of any kind.  For a track with so many quiet sections the clarity cannot be faulted.  To the final note this plays with Mint- quality audio.  A fantastic end to a fantastic side!

'Chicago North-Western' is nigh on perfect apart from a small number of non-intrusive light ticks on the intro - not clicks!  From that point on it plays with immaculate clarity and with no 'background.  Overall I'd grade this as Near Mint such is the quality on offer here.

'Train' plays with a precision and depth that is equal to that of a high quality vinyl pressed only yesterday.  In other words Mint is an honest appraisal of the audio.  The clarity and warmth of the audio is sensational it could not play any better.

I am delighted to say 'Nadine' is of the same 'high end' standard with no interference whatsoever not even a dust tick.  Mint again.

The quiet acoustic intro on 'Are You Satisfied?' has to be heard to be believed!  There is literally no 'background' of any kind and 'as new' is no exaggeration.  This clarity continues as the vocal begins and to the final note the playback is STUNNING in every way.  This is Mint without question.

In summary this early Vertigo pressing plays to a standard that in my opinion could not be bettered.  The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is so impressive and aside from a handful of gentle ticks at the start of S2 the playback is so incredibly 'clean'.  Not only that but the gatefold is also one of the best you are likely to find today and the original swirl inner is also in great condition.  A stunning 'package'!

The Gatefold

The non-laminated cover is in excellent shape with only minimal wear, probably one of the 'cleanest' you could find.  The edges have hardly any rubbing and the wide spine has only one small scuff on the band title and very minor wear on the corners.  The right hand corners are extremely clean with very little wear and the opening edge has only light 'feathering'.  The front cover is exceptionally clean with just a small number of faint scratch marks that you can only see when held at a certain angle and the back cover is just as good with only one minor crease line.  There is only minor fading around the edges on both sides and the inside of the gatefold is super clean with no marking.  A fine example overall.

'Swirl' Inner

The original poly-lined 'swirl' inner is in superb shape with no side splits and only a little age related fading on the top edges and minimal creasing.

The Labels

The Vertigo labels are stunning with marking or writing.  There is only some spindle wear but not that much as stated.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
