Juicy Lucy : Lie Back And Enjoy It 1Y1 / 2Y2 1st Press

This first pressing plays to an excellent standard with only minimal interference.  The vast majority is stunning and a full grading, as per usual, is given below.  S1 in particular is very impressive with only a little interference at the start.  S2 plays extremely well with just a little more static here and there but the classic 'Willie The Pimp' for example is outstanding!

The 6 panel fold out poster cover is in excellent condition with only a little wear and the original swirl inner is fully intact but with some marking here and there.

As this is a genuine first press it has the large 'Swirl' logo on the Side B label and VERTIGO is written below the spindle hole.  There is also no break between the tracks 'Willie The Pimp' and 'Lie Back And Enjoy It' so looks as though there are only four tracks on S2 when there are of course five.  The track durations for these two numbers are credited on the inside as 7:08 individually when the correct times are 7:08 combined.

The audio on S1 is Near Mint (T1 intro VG+)

The audio S2 is Near Mint for the majority (T1 intro Ex then Ex+ for remainder / T2 intro Ex- / T4 Mint- / T5 VG+)

Visual grading

The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a strong glossy sheen.  There is only one very small scratch at the start of S1 but aside from that has only a small number of very faint hairlines.  There is a longer one on S2 but is still very faint and has no affect on the audio.  There is some 'bag rash' which is unavoidable sometimes when a vinyl is kept inside a poly-lined inner for so many years without being removed.  This has resulted in a number of faint wavy lines and no amount of cleaning will remove them!  Don't let this put you off as they have no impact on the audio and looking on the positive side it does mean the record has really not been played very much and indeed there is only very minimal spindle wear.  The labels are also very clean with only 3/4 very faint 'spots'.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Thinking Of My Life' plays very clearly but does have a small number of light ticks/clicks in the background.  This does not last long and as the vocal comes in the audio plays with great definition and power and no other interference.  The clarity is very impressive throughout and the guitar solo towards the end is flawless, the fade out has only very minimal static.  I will grade the intro as VG+ but the remainder is Near Mint in my opinion.

'Built For Comfort' is superb from the very groove with only a couple of minor ticks on the intro.  The audio is so rich and deep and the mid sax solo is close to perfect with only one light tick.  The next vocal is perfect and the following guitar solo also could not play any better.  To the end it plays with sublime quality and it's the depth of the music that really stands out.  There is no underlying static and this record has clearly not been overplayed.  Near Mint

'Pretty Woman' plays with wonderful quality from the very start and continues in the same precise way.  There are no ticks, clicks or pops and only a minimal amount of barely audible static in a couple of sections.  A very strong Near Mint version.

The acoustic intro on 'Whisky In My Jar' is faultless as is the first vocal.  From that point on the audio is so sharp and precise and every vocal and instrumental section plays so well.  There is hardly any inner groove distortion on the final section which again pays testament to how well this record has been preserved.  I will grade as Near Mint but the vast majority is certainly better than that!

The intro on 'Hello L.A. Bye Bye Birmingham' is very 'clean' with only very minimal static and a couple of minor ticks.  The first vocal has only one dull click sound and from then on plays extremely well with only some light static here and there which really isn't intrusive.  Ex on the intro and Ex+ for the remainder.

'Changed My Mind' has some static on the intro and as the vocal begins the playback is superb.  It continues to play with great clarity and barely any static.  There are no clicks or pops - an Ex- intro but the rest is Near Mint for sure.

The acoustic intro on 'That Woman's Got Something' is nigh on perfect and whilst there is one static/scratchy type sound about one minute in that lasts for about a quarter of a second the rest of the track is stunning.  The clarity is outstanding and there is only a little static on the fade out.  Near Mint overall.

'Willie The Pimp' is superb from the very first groove and this quality does not decrease as the track progresses.  It plays with sublime power and depth and nowhere is that more obvious than during the 'high octane' section.  The audio is off the scale here!  There is no distortion and you cannot fault it in any way.  The rest of the track is of the same standard - the percussive section is so strong and with only a hint of almost imperceptible static and the final raucous section is again fantastic!  This is stunning and Mint- more than does it justice.  What a version!

'Lie Back And Enjoy It' ends the album with some static which is more obvious being such a quiet instrumental but the music nonetheless plays very clearly and the static does decrease as it progresses.  VG+ is a fair grade to give here.

In summary this first pressing plays to a very impressive standard with only minimal interference.  The vast majority is stunning and I believe my comprehensive grading more than explains what you will be getting!  Yes there are a small number of ticks and a little static but there are no loud clicks or pops and the clarity overall is very strong.  'Willie The Pimp' in particular is SUPERB and I cannot remember when I last heard such a powerful version that has no distortion at all.

The Cover & Swirl Inner

The 6 panel fold-out poster cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear.  For once the edges are very clean with only minimal wear and only the top edge of the back cover has 4/5 very small 'nicks'.  The spine has some minor rubbing on the edges but remains 100% legible.  All corners have only very minimal wear and the front cover is very clean aside from one small faded/scuff area near the right edge.  The back cover is in great order, it just has the 'nicks' at the top as stated.  All of the other panels are in excellent order with only a couple of minor creases and a little fading on one inner spine.  An excellent example overall.

The original swirl inner has no side splits or tears and only minimal creasing.  However, there is some light marking and some age related fading around the edges that you often see.

Play tested on my Pro-Ject Essential III Turntable / B&W 684 Speakers
