2nd album by the incredible British Prog band Juicy Lucy, formed around the US lap steel guitar player Glenn Campbell, resident in UK at the time. The second lineup of the group, which recorded this album, included also vocalist Paul Williams, saxophonist Chris Mercer, guitarist Micky Moody, bassist Keith Ellis and drummer Rod Coombes. Heavily Blues based, the band expanded into Hard Rock, Psychedelia and early Prog, playing mostly original material and superb arrangements of standards. This album includes what is probably the best ever cover of Frank Zappa's tune "Willie The Pimp", which is absolutely incredible. Campbell's guitar work is simply stunning and miles above anything done at the time. Williams' throaty vocals are superbly expressive, and all the other band members play incredibly well, turning this album into a timeless masterpiece. In many respects this album encapsulates everything that was great in music by the end of the 1960s:originality,innovation, guts and talent.

The burning question remains: Can blue men sing the whites?, and though they occasionally have proven they can, mostly they can't and that's what we got here. Guitarist Moody surely is a bonus, but singer Williams is not and the choice of repertoire is thoroughly conservative. Except, of course, for the unexpected Zappa track, but unfortunately they make it sound like everything else. Most remarkable feat here must be the inclusion of two tracks that are exactly 7 minutes and 8 seconds long.                                    Label/Format: Vertigo – original first issue format with large spiral on side two. These have matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful conditions: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive  The full swirl design on side one is pristine from rim to hole with no chipping or scuffs. Side two, the more critically revealing white side, has fantastic lovely whiteness with no grubbiness or fingermarks that so often ruin it just  1  light, fine ,faint spindle trace  and no wear around the hole area.  Both labels are almost connoisseur standard as is the record itself.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good weight for this record and label.

Rarity: Quite rare: and that is without taking condition into consideration. This ultimate first pressed (ALL ‘1’ STAMPERS) original record has a superb sound and a neat original inner sleeve. Packaged in a 3 x 2 ft poster style cover made with single thickness unprotected card. Often this was wall-mounted which usually means pin-holes or tape marks, and where this happened resulting in major damage or fading. This one is unmounted. Storage had to be first-class for this cover to survive and only a small percentage of those who bought this on issue gave it the tender loving care it needed. The poster cover has no splits, bumps to all four corners and record un-priced sticker aside the vertigo label, I Punch Hole See Photos but that apart is fully intact and overall impressive. Compared to most of these (and similar ones e.g. Mike Absolom and Ramases), this is way above average and looks lovely as I hope my pictures show. Not pristine, few ever will be, but this is a strong all-round example, and these really are getting immensely hard to find.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second Juicy Lucy album following their mini classic self-titled debut. This one, from my experience is harder to find, and finding a copy with anything like a decent cover is fast getting near impossible. Lie Back… is classic blues rock, arguably even stronger than the debut. The highlight for me – but I am biased of course – is the band’s superb rendition of Frank Zappa’s classic ‘Willie the Pimp’, but there is not a filler track included in the nine of offer. Original Vertigo spiral records, especially in top condition are getting increasingly hard to find, but this ultimate first-off-the-line (1 1 1 stamper) first pressed record is hugely impressive and plays accordingly. The cover, although not perfect, is lovely and will take a lot of beating. So another Vertigo gem is here on the open market for collectors.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT:

Another leap into the realm of complictated packaging is executed with this cover. It is a large six-part folding piece of board. All six band members are kept for eternity through excellent portrait photographs of the men at work.
The lettering is indeed quite juicy and rather original.
The inside of the enormous cover is taken by an outstanding live shot of the band. even with a small fold split, I consider this grading more than justified on what is a hugely difficult and challenging cover. A multi-folded poster type measuring around 36 x 24 inches. Unlaminated, made with quite thin matt, smooth card. Printed and made in England by Howard Printers. Includes the 1970 date-coded Swirl inner sleeve.

Cover Faces: Vertigo poster-style covers have to be put into true perspective: firstly, many were wall-mounted; secondly, few will ever survive in top conditions these days and thirdly, these albums did not sell in big numbers and rare from the start. These are more difficult to store and even the few more careful collectors from issue time found it hard to keep them from getting creased, rubbed, torn and damaged. Viewing this example even in such condition is a pretty rare sight, even though it’s not perfect . I have shown this in close-up with the cover folded up, alongside the spine text which almost remarkably is fully present with hardly a trace of a rub to the lettering. That is a massive plus on this exposed outer edge, so many of these will be seen threadbare with no text or ink at all for that matter. Clearly, the two outer cover faces will be the most at risk of wear and damage but both are clean and fresh – the two outer ‘cover’ ones being picture two on my list and the one taken with the inner sleeve. Both being near exceptional, clean, fresh and hardly rubbed. The Usual bumps to all 4 corners. The inner faces are clean and impressive as well, the one small hole when opened out apart, all others are solid and strong. The odd rub where the folds cross, those areas ultra fragile but here solid with no ‘holes’ or erosion. The odd small end crease when folded are so hard to avoid totally. This one is unmounted and will take some beating, another huge bonus is the fact it is folded very neatly in manufacture with all the edges near flush and parallel. These cover types were often crooked and that makes edges all the more vulnerable to damage. I hope my pictures to the talking. Clearly the small split – which is very minor compared to what it could have been like – could be an issue to the connoisseur collectors, but trying finding one a great deal better these days. When covers are this fragile, sometimes a little give-and-take has to apply – surely?

Cover Edges/Corners: The spine has the small top edge scuff that being the only real ‘damage’on this perilous cover. It remains very solid and straight that apart, and all the text is present and strong. The top edges have thickened a little, this mainly to the back one. Against the odds, the bottom storage edges are neat with hardly any rubbing up to the right corner that has a little on the front. Right edges, one being a thick fold (minimal rubbing, neat and straight), and two open ends, both crisp and neat. A little corner tip rubbing on some and a little tip creasing on the lower ones.

Cover Summary: I consider these Swirl poster covers THE most difficult to find in decent condition – this one is way better than ‘decent’. Being almost fully intact, clean and fresh looking, this is considerably above average and indeed could prove an upgrade for some. Not for perfectionists, but many Vertigo collectors can lie back and enjoy it.Only small flaw is a light redness on inner on one photo top left .

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT ++: or very close to. No real wear,  Other than that, little else just creases. These often deliberate to stop to record sliding out, not an unwise move on this cover especially. Both window circles are neat and undamaged and the lining pretty clear, Any other creasing minimal light, all edges unsplit with NO repairs. This one is date-coded 0970 (September 1970), which marries up to the ultimate 1 1 1 stampers making it probably the earliest copy you could be offered.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:   NR MINT - EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean with impressive shine, freshness and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very fine, light, whispy and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. A few tiny ‘marks’ near the rim of side two are not actually real marks at all, tiny and totally harmless and look hard to even see it. Indeed, if I actually graded this lovely Swirly in normal room light, the grading would be stiller higher, only with bright lamp grading do these bordering on minuscule surface blemishes register. Visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing flaws.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive Spiral plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Play-graded, as usual, on a very revealing system as listed in full further down, few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been  played only once or twice very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better, and how many genuine ultimate first pressings will be made available? Strongly recommended, many Spiral collectors will treasure this elusive first issue.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
