Label/Format: Vertigo – original full Spiral on side one and large Spiral logo on side two. Please note also, this is one of the earliest pressings. This rarer example includes the text ‘A Philips Record Product’ at the 6 o’clock position of the text side label. Only the earliest pressed Vertigo’s ever included it, quickly dropped from subsequent pressings.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks. The record appears very little played, side one playing surface has moderate inner sleeve dulling, but the record plays superbly with hardly anything to fault at all. In terms of sound quality, one of the very best I have heard in ages.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This was Juicy Lucy’s first and for many, their best album, the second title within the highly sort-after Spiral catalogue – probably the most famous and collectable progressive label of them all. This one not really ‘progressive’, but the Vertigo label is known for being that. One of the very early Spiral classics and includes one of the very best and famous covers. Earthy blues-rock featuring a supreme version of Bo Diddley’s ‘Who Do You Love’, superbly recorded and produced as well. The cover has a little wear, mostly to the edges, but remains attractive as seen. The record appears little used, some surface dulling from the polylining of the inner sleeve, but with NO affect on sound at all, in fact this copy plays superbly throughout with hardly anything to fault. Not for visual purists, but those who want high audio quality will enjoy this impressive set.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): with most of any wear on the bottom storage edges. An unlaminated gatefold format that is highly vulnerable to wear, especially ring wear and rubbing. This one has the original WARNING — Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings inside the gatefold, later versions had the word ‘Vertigo’ changed to ‘this label’.Printed and made in England, uncredited, includes the Spiral inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A few eyebrows raised when this first hit the shops I guess. This has light rubbing near the edges and corner tips, any marks few, fine and light, this front has largely avoided any creasing and remains attractive with very deep colour.

Cover Back: The back is similar with no ring wear and the main surface avoiding significant rubbing. The only creasing fine near the left edge. Both sides overall have fared well.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Hardly anything inside to really fault, impressive as seen.

Top Edges: Both very straight, flat and flush, moderate rubbing to the ends, only light patchy inbetween.

Bottom Edges: Moderate consistent rubbing to both, again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All clean and sharp with little wear. Minimal thickening and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, the card not flush in manufacture to emphasise the fact. Record enters on the back edge, the front is closed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid and straight with minimal traces of any compression, it has light tilt to left from storage. Folded square, so the edges meet up near closely together and parallel. There is moderate rubbing to the top corner area, patchy, mostly fine and light further down. All text has survived intact, which so often is not the case.

Corners: All corners have at least moderate rubbing, but mostly seen viewed end-on, less so on the main faces. Fine shape largely retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: With most wear on the edges and ends, and the main areas attractive, this will please many collectors. But not for the Vertigo purists who want ‘perfect’ at any cost. This has always been a difficult cover, it does not age well, so I consider this an attractive example as the pictures hopefully confirm.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: and these are getting harder to find in better conditions too. This is polylined and clear with very neat and undamaged window circles. A couple of tiny edge splits I neatly repaired to stop them potentially widening in the future. As usual, a little aged with seam edge adhesive browning, but very little creasing at all. This one is date-coded 1070 (October 1970), so this inner is not the original, but as close to as I had in stock.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): this NOT taking into account of the two areas of moderate inner sleeve polymer dulling to the surface of one, there are only very gentle traces on side two – all seen more under light and showing far less in average room light. A very fine visual copy in terms of lack of usage marks or blemishes, it appears little used. So the quite commonly-seen surface dulling the result of being left undisturbed for many years – this is totally harmless in terms of audio quality with no sound whatsoever – in fact this record plays superbly throughout. Not for visual purists, but if sound is the main priority, this will please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant early Swirl clasic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better for sound and can be strongly recommended on this basis.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
