Juicy Luicy : Lie Back And Enjoy It 1Y1 / 2Y2 1st Press Vertigo

This first pressing on the Vertigo label is just stunning!  Having played it in full I can safely say I have never heard better.  With only one very light tick on S1 this is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing in every sense as it just could not play with any greater precision.  No clicks, pops or static and no distortion either.  I cannot overstate just how clean and precise the audio is and it is obvious the vinyl has not been overplayed and indeed has only minimal spindle wear lending further weight to that theory.  The vinyl is also visually very impressive.

I believe this is one of the finest fold out covers that you are likely to see today.  With only minimal wear it is very clean and the original swirl inner is also in great condition.

A genuine first press has a 1Y1/2Y2 matrix, a large Swirl logo on the S2 label with VERTIGO at the bottom.  There is no break between 'Willie The Pimp' and 'Lie Back And Enjoy It' on S2 so looks like there are only four tracks on the side when there are of course five.

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen and no scratches.  There is one faint 'fade' line and a small hairline on the first track that is a little more obvious but neither have any affect on the stunning audio.  Aside from that I can only see a small number of faint sleeve removal hairlines and obviously there is no groove wear.  The run out grooves are very clean and the Vertigo labels are unmarked with very little spindle wear.

Play grading

The percussive intro on 'Thinking Of My Life' is so close to perfect with just one light tick and then the opening vocal section does indeed play 'as new'.  The mid sax instrumental keeps up the standard and the next vocal is just as strong.  The end solo is superb and the long fade out has only one mega light dust tick.  A Mint- start to the album.

With complete silence in the dead wax (showing just how clean the vinyl is) the intro on 'Built For Comfort' has no background at all.  Williams' raw opening vocal is faultless and it continues to play with stunning precision and... no interference.  The mid sax solo from Mercer is a case in point, it plays so clearly.  The remainder is of the same high end standard and this has to be graded as Mint such is the quality of the audio.  Blues rock at its very best, a stunning version!

'Pretty Woman' plays with superb clarity and depth from the get go and this quality does not drop as it progresses.  A real foot tapper the audio is so strong and deep and is again 'as new' with no sign of any interference not even on the fade out.  Another Mint track.

The acoustic intro on 'Whisky In My Jar' is faultless and from then on plays so clearly and with that typical deep rich Juicy Lucy sound.  For a final track the sonic quality is so impressive and if there is any inner groove distortion it is so minor and barely noticeable.  A fantastic Mint- version to complete the side.

'Hello L.A., Bye Bye Birmingham' has a perfect intro and the opening vocal is equally as clear.  It's easy to forget this album is 53 years old this year because it certainly isn't playing like it has been around for over half a century!  The clarity and depth of the audio is outstanding and from start to finish there is no intrusion on the audio not even a dust tick as I often like to say!  It could not play any better and you would not believe how clean the fade out is.  Mint is again richly deserved.

The intro on 'Changed My Mind' is 'as new' and that basically describes the rest of the track.  The vinyl has clearly not been played very much and that, along with being very carefully looked after, is why it plays with its original sonic quality.  This is Mint from the first note to the last.

'That Woman's Got Something' plays with immaculate precision throughout.  The clarity of sound is STUNNING and each note is so clean and precise on this largely acoustic number.  Another Mint track.

'Willie The Pimp' plays with superb audio and of course no interference.  The power and depth is tangible and the first raucous solo from Moody is a prime example of that.  I cannot find one single negative it just plays with sublime quality through every vocal and instrumental section.  The high octane end section is phenomenal - there is no distortion whatsoever.  Mint

The gentle 'Lie Back And Enjoy It' ends this fine album with suitably impressive audio.  No hiding place here as it is so quiet and yet there is no intrusion on the audio.  A Mint conclusion you could say.

In summary this first pressing plays with impeccable quality on both sides with no interference.  Audio does not get any better than this!  Ok there is one very light tick on the first track but really you cannot fault the sonic quality on offer here.  The clarity of sound is just STUNNING and it goes without saying that this is another FINAL UPGRADE archive album that i am selling.  It certainly has the wow factor!

The Cover & Swirl Inner

The 6 panel fold out poster sleeve is in lovely condition and has to be the best I have seen in many a year.  It is often found in poor condition precisely because it has so many folds and edges and that it isn't laminated but this one has been preserved very well.  It has just one small split at the top of one fold and a little creasing on a couple of 'corners'.  The edges are super clean and it is unmarked on both sides.  A superb example and easily worth its Ex grading.

Not surprisingly the original swirl inner is also in superb condition with no side splits or tears and only a little age related fading / marking on the top and bottom edge.  Hardly any creasing either.

Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

This record has been cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
