WEB REVIEW OF A CLASSIC!

#1: Jazz critic Will Friedwald has stated that Julie London's records were so popular in the 1950s mainly because she looked so drop-dead gorgeous on the album covers. The marketing hook behind Calendar Girl may just be the main example for those critical of London's musical career, since its sleeve has made it a prized collector's item. The famous wraparound cover depicts cheesecake shots of London posed for every month of the year, while original issues of the album included a more-than-suggestive insert photo of the singer stretched out in bed. While Friedwald's correct about London's physical beauty, he's wrong in suggesting that the vocalist didn't have the talent to go along with her looks. Like Chet Baker, Julie London had an extremely limited vocal range but she did the most with what she had, possessing a special knack for torch songs that cast her in the role of a woman constantly being destroyed by love in general and by men in particular. The cover concept of Calendar Girl is carried over from the concept album, which features a narrative of romance lost and found for each month of the year before ending with one final tune called "The Thirteenth Month" (which is illustrated by that insert picture of London in bed). Since there aren't quality standards for every month of the year, one of Calendar Girl's pleasures can be found in the numbers written especially for the album, particularly those penned by Bobby Troup, London's husband. The jazz-oriented Troup hit pay dirt with such fine compositions as "Route 66," "Daddy," and "The Meaning of the Blues," but too few of his smart, witty songs have been widely recorded. Calendar Girl is a fun, if often bittersweet, ride and a must-have for fans of classic vocal pop and lounge music.

I'm the author of the first book to celebrate the life of jazz vocalist, actress and television personality Julie London. My book "Lady Liberty: The Definitive Julie London Handbook" was released on Amazon in November of 2013. 

#2: I thought I'd write this review to clear up some of the inaccuracies in historical facts concerning this album. Julie London was signed in 1955 to Liberty Records after recording 4 singles as a guest artist with the Ted Comstock Orchestra for the Bethlehem label. CALENDAR GIRL was Julie's 3rd album for Liberty (preceded by Julie Is Her Name vol. 1, and Lonely Girl) and her 2nd concept album (Lonely Girl being her first) which would become one of her trademarks. Calendar Girl was released in May of 1956 and was produced by soon to be husband Bobby Troup (singer/songwriter and pianist). Julie had just gone through a devastating divorce from actor/producer Jack Webb. Julie was the mother at this time of two girls by Jack, Stacy and Lisa Webb.

Julie was featured in a television interview in her home with her two daughters, where she had discussed that the album cover took much longer to create then the actual album. Calendar Girl on the original vinyl fold up album has become one of the most collectibles of Julie. I have seen this album going for nearly $200 at record shows. I myself have one of the few signed albums by Julie. The pin up calendar spread was indeed erotically teasing including a 13th month photo.

The Peter King Orchestra accompanied Julie on this album with arrangements by Peter with featured songs for every month of the year. Bobby Troup (soon to be Julie's 2nd husband .. married in 59) contributed two compositions he composed: "February Always Brings the Rain" and my favorite cut from the album the swingy "This October". "This October" had some inside jokes about Julie and Bobby's courtship. Bobby was born Oct 18 (ironically Julie would later die on Bobby's birthday in 2000), and they indeed met in Autumn so the line "I Caught Him in The Autumn" was a cheeky pun at their romance and also a slight aside to Jack Webb. That Julie had finally moved on. Julie's close friend from her high school days Arthur Hamilton, most famous for penning her "Cry Me A River" also contributed two tracks: "Time For August" and "13th month".

As an album it is a fresh, cheeky and playful sound but it lacks some emotional intimacy of her previous album "Lonely Girl". Her guitarist Al Viola indeed play on this album as well.

VINYL GRADING SCALE:

Near Mint (NM) 

(Jacket) If the jacket is sealed there may be some minor corner damage from storage, it may or may not have the shrink-wrap, but the jacket itself will be in pristine condition. The corners will show very little wear (there will be no fraying) and will still be somewhat pointy to the touch. The cover will show no more than very minor dents or some single creases, no full bends that will cause multiple creases/damage. There will be no visible ring wear. No writing, rips or tears on the cover or seams. No bubbling, water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. The inside of the gate-fold will be in the same condition.  Cutout bin punches, price stickers, staples would start being listed at the NM category and would be noted accordingly as they affect the jacket itself.

(LP) You should not hear any surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain that just opened appearance. There may be a surface blemish or two, but they will not have any affect on the sound. There will be no warping. There will be no major blemishes, light or deep scratches. The label will be free of writing and stains. There should be no spindle marks. 

Excellent (VG++) 

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink-wrap but the jacket itself will still be in beautiful condition. The corners will have minimal wear (no fraying).There may be minor dents and creases . Light scratches could be on the jacket, but nothing severe. Depending on age some discolor/yellowing may show, but will not be overbearing.  Ring wear should be very minimal or non-existent...no dark, full, half, or quarter rings. No writing rips or tears. No bubbling, water stains or peeling of the cover . All inner gate-folds will be in similar condition. Covers that appear NM but has a notch, Sawcut or a diagonal cut will be graded as VG++!

(LP) You should not hear any sustained surface noise (snaps,crackles, pops) when you play the record. There will not be any skips or repeats. The LP will retain its most of it's glossiness and will appear like new. There may be a few surface blemishes, or a stray light scratch that may cause a moment of crackling, but nothing prolonged, and instances of this will be few. Often this will mostly occur only at the beginning of the groove on each side where the needle dropped. There will be no warping. There will be no deep scratches. There may be minor spotting or fog, but it will not affect the sound. The label will be free of writing and stains. Minimal spindle marks. 

Very Good Plus (VG+) 

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap.  There may be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear and there may be the beginnings of fraying but not full on.  Some dents/creases or scratches may be noticeable, but nothing too pronounced. There could be noticeable discolor/yellowing .There may be some minor ring wear at the top and bottom; again you would have to look for it. No writing, rips or tears. Possibly some light bubbling.  No water/mold stains or peeling of the cover in any way. 

(LP) There may be some blemishes, maybe a scratch or two, but nothing too deep. It will not cause the record to skip or repeat. There will be no prolonged surface noise. There may be some minor warping but it will have no affect on the listening experience at all. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG+ record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. 

Very Good (VG/VG-) TO BE SOLD AS IS!!!

(Jacket) May or may not have shrink wrap.  There will be some easier to see imperfections, though nothing that will detract from the overall appearance in a major way. The corners will have some wear or fraying possibly causing seam splitting close to the seam.  There may be split seams on any side.  Usually not full side splits though.  Sometimes they may be fixed by tape, sometimes not. Some dents/creases or scratches will  be noticeable on the jacket, sometimes pronounced. Discolor and yellowing can be commonplace, as are smaller water/mold stains and some bubbling. There maybe a smaller tear on the cover, but nothing overly pronounced. Ring wear will certainly be pronounced. There may be some writing/defacing, but it will be minor. 

(LP) There will be some blemishes, and some few scratches. They should not be at the feel-able stage though. There could be a skip or repeat, but only one or two at most. More often the deeper scratches will cause more frequent and prolonged surface noise. There may be some warping but it will not cause the needle to jump. Chances are there will be spindle marks. A VG/VG- record will obviously have been played and occasionally handled roughly by the original owner.
