This rare and very collectable first pressing on the Philips label is STUNNING!  Having played every track in full I can confidently say the clarity, depth and power of the audio is exceptional.  There is no interference of any kind and it has clearly hardly ever been played based on the audio quality and that there is barely any spindle wear on the labels.  Not only that but the vinyl is also visually stunning with no scratches etc and has been preserved beautifully over the last 50+ years.

This is an underrated hidden gem this one and is a FINAL UPGRADE album of that I have no doubt i.e. no need to purchase another as you will not find better audio than this!  Increasingly hard to find in this condition the winning bidder will not be disappointed!

The laminated Roger Dean cover is in great condition with only very minimal wear and the original inner is also in superb shape.  A stunning 'package' obverall.

Visual description

The vinyl is in fantastic condition with an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  In all honesty 'as new' is not far off the mark!  Under a strong light I cannot find any obvious hairlines at all - the only thing I can I can see is a very faint 'fade' type line on S2 which you only notice when the record is revolving.  I am being ultra harsh there and it obviously has no affect on the stunning audio quality.  The run out grooves are super clean and the Philips labels are also in pristine condition with barely any wear.  A superb example!

Play grading  

'The Minotaur' plays with stunning quality with no sign of any interference.  It has a 'raw' quality of sound and there is no distortion on the top end either.  A superb start to this underrated album and it easily grades as Mint such is the clarity and power on offer here.

The piano intro on 'Fly Me High' is faultless and the next section is equally as good - the strong bass adds so much depth here.  From then on it plays so well with very clear vocals and the instrumental sections are stunning.  Even the 5 second silent section is...completely silent!  The final section and vocal keep up this fine standard and I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint as there is literally nothing that detracts from the audio.  A sublime version.

I am running out of superlatives already!  The intro on 'Change In Louise' is perfect and the opening vocal has no interference either.  That by now familiar raw sound is very much in evidence here and it's good that that this album wasn't over-produced as it would have lost some of that 'quality'.  This track is very powerful with no distortion and the clarity is very impressive also.  No ticks, clicks, pops and no static and the fade out plays to perfection.  Another Mint track.

'Black Widow' plays with great clarity on the intro and this quality remains during the first 'high octane' section.  From then on it plays as per the other tracks i.e. like it has hardly been played.  There is one light tick during the quieter mid instrumental but you can't really fault the audio.  The playback is so strong and there is no interference.  Is there a minor amount of distortion?  If there is it is so minimal and totally non-intrusive.  The powerful end section is breathtaking!  So powerful and it has lost none of its original sonic quality.  Superb!  Mint-

'Help Me' ends the side as it started with very impressive audio.  Some minor inner groove distortion maybe but more that raw sound again I would say.  There is no 'background' and again Mint- is well deserved.

The classic intro on 'Natural Thoughts' is 'as new' and the first vocal is just as strong.  It continues to play with sensational quality and this is one that you can certainly turn up to max without fear of distortion!  A flawless Mint track in my opinion.

'Am I Blue' plays with stunning clear audio throughout with no intrusion.  A relatively quiet track this bluesy number has only a couple of barely audible dust ticks and in essence plays 'as new' from the first note to the last.  The guitar work is so strong and Sargeant's vocals are just off the scale good!  Mint

The quiet intro on 'Reprieve' is perfect and this 'high end' standard is more than kept up you will not be surprised to hear.  A great track there is so much to like here!  No need to elaborate this is Mint in every sense of the word.

'In The Morning' again plays with such precise audio - no interference and still that same deep sound.  The mid guitar solo could not play any better and to the end this plays with a real dynamic quality.  Mint

'Death By Fire' once again provide further evidence of a vinyl so well preserved over the last 50+ years.  With only a couple of dust ticks on the intro it proceeds to play with STUNNING audio even during the quieter moments.  The clarity and definition of the audio is so impressive - a more 'progressive' number this is as good as it gets!  I cannot overstate just how well this classic plays - there are quite simply no negatives.  The quiet mid instrumental does not even have a single dust tick let alone anything worse and the remainder does not disappoint either.  There is one light tick but that is the only intrusion across the entire 5.5 minutes.  The end section is 'different' - if you know the album you will know what I mean - but it nonetheless plays 'as new' with no interference at all.  A STUNNING Mint- ending to this fine album.

In summary this very collectable first pressing on the Philips label plays with outstanding quality from start to finish with no interference and FINAL UPGRADE time warp classic easily applies in this case.  This is a rare album as it was only pressed in limited numbers and I very much doubt you could find a better one!  It has hardly been played which has helped it retain its original sonic quality but it has also been so well preserved and that includes the cover also.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is fantastic!  I have never owned one of these before but I have to say I was very impressed with the music, all the tracks are a great listen, and it's good to hear that they are still active today!  It was a shame commercial success eluded them.  If you want this album as a first pressing + perfect audio then this is the one to own - a simple equation!

The Cover & Original Inner Sleeve

The laminated cover is in superb condition with very little shelf wear.  The top edge has no rubbing and the bottom edge just has one small area of most wear/minor split by the right corner.  The spine is very clean with only a small number of minor crease lines and the other corners are near perfect with only very minimal wear top right.  The opening edge has no handling wear at all.  The front cover is so clean with only a handful of small creases next to the spine and one tiny white scuff next to the opening edge.  The back cover is faultless really and looks as good as new.  A fine example overall and Ex+ is well deserved.

The original 'Plastic Bags...' inner (dated 1170) is in great condition with no obvious wear.  Hardly been removed from the cover I would say!  There are no side splits or tear and barely any creasing or age related fading.  Top quality.
