Cab Calloway's older sister BLANCHE was no shrinking violet! It must have been in her genes, because she's just as much of a rip-snorting, scat-singing Roman Candle as her little brother!
In 1931, she led a zany band of Hot Shots, including EDGAR BATTLE (trumpet), BEN WEBSTER (tenor sax), CLYDE HART (piano) and COZY COLE (drums).
On this Victor release, as BLANCHE CALLOWAY AND HER JOY BOYS, she vocally storms her way through "JUST A CRAZY SONG," making it REALLY crazy, practically dragging her band behind her. On "SUGAR BLUES," WILLIM MASSEY sings, and CLARENCE E. SMITH does a perfect imitation of Clyde McCoy on trumpet.
What the labels don't mention is the solo jazz tenor sax playing debut of BEN WEBSTER, on his first recording session!
I permanently lament the fact that Blanche and Cab Calloway never made a joint recording! It would have been furious! I bet that before they left home, their intra-sibling arguments kept the neighbors up at night!
This original 1931 "Scroll" Victor 22661 is in respectable E- condition. At some point, somehow, during this record's long existence, droplets of house paint splattered over it and dried on the "Sugar Blues" side. Couple years ago, I spent the greater part of an evening with a safety pin and "Goo-Gone," working it over, painstakingly prying up the paint as best I could. "Sugar Blues" now plays mostly without audible interference, although you can still see the paint! It was in my collection for a LONG time, before a cleaner copy turned up.
