Description
After a few years in the doldrums, Studio One resumed its position at the forefront of Jamaican music in the late Seventies, thanks in part to a number of classic albums, and also to the superb musicians who formed the houseband the Brentford Rockers. One of the greatest of all the albums was the Showcase set, featuring six full length extended mixes, released by keyboard king Jackie Mittoo in around 1980. The other musicians were a stellar bunch (Horsemouth Wallace, Bagga Walker, Ernest Ranglin and Pablove Black), and the set mixed reworkings of old riddims with brand new killers for the sound systems. It helps of course that this is on a superb New York pressing, as the JA pressing plant had been past its best for a few years. This copy is in excellent condition, as you can hear. Tracks are - Side One: Lover's Rock (a reworking of "Love Me Forever"), Wall Street (co-written with Bagga, a new funk killer that mashed up many a dance), No Woman No Cry (the only vocal cut - possibly Doreen Shaffer?) Side Two: Night in Ethiopia (remake of "Satta"), Oboe (instrumental cut of Carlton & the Shoes "L:et Me Love You", based on Bob James funk hit "Westchester Lady"), Rang Man (reworking of "Please Be True") -
