Up for sale is a very nice copy of an exceptionally rare vintage 7 inch 45 rpm vinyl record by an underappreciated artist who died young.  This is the original release from circa 1964 and features a couple of killer "spouge" songs, a genre that the artist is credited with inventing!  This is among the nicer copies I have seen of those that have been sold online.

Jackie Opel (birth name Dalton Sinclair Bishop) was born in 1937 or 1938 in Bridgetown, Barbados.  In the early 1960s, he was discovered by Byron Lee (band master of The Dragonaires) who brought him to Jamaica.  Opel is credited with founding a style of music called "spouge", a fusion of Jamaican ska, Trinidadian calypso, along with American rhythm & blues and spirituals, and even British sea shanty songs .  He was quite successful and was actually backed by Bob Marley and the Wailers on several recordings.  He was known as the "Jackie Wilson of Jamaica" and was as talented a dancer as he was a singer.  Opel eventually moved to Trinidad for several years before returning to Barbados.  Not long after, he was tragically killed in an auto accident at the age of only 31 or 32, in 1970.  An article published on June 22, 2018 in Barbados Today, by George Alleyne, documents that for all his talent and innovations, Opel never achieved the recognition he deserved on his home island.
