Beethoven: The Five Cello Sonatas
HMV SLS 5042, 1976. Three L.P. box set.
Here is a bit of a prize rarity. This three record box set was released in 1976. Recorded live at the Edinburgh Festival six years earlier and issued by EMI / HMV by arrangement with the BBC, this collection is acknowledged to be a particularly fine recording of the five Beethoven cello sonatas. In addition to the sonatas, Du Pré and Barenboim also play Beethoven’s variations on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute and Handel’s Judas Maccabeus. Original examples of this box set are hard to come by now - and expensive when they do turn up.
This example really is in very good condition. I have inspected all six sides carefully and there are barely any marks visible to the playing surfaces at all. There are however a small number of places where clicks are heard for three or four revolutions and on my turntable all the records all play with some faint crackling from static in places. The labels are all in first class condition as you can see.
The box and four-sided insert are in excellent condition. The box is solid (none of those broken corners that box sets are prone to) and has no rubbing or scuffing at all to the front or back. There is some very slight rubbing to the sides. The inside of the box is clean. The insert is also crisp, clean and undamaged.
All-in-all this is a nice example of this hard-to-find box set. It is not in perfect condition but it is really very good and is offered here with a very modest starting price.
