ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This excellent LP from RCA (LSC-2365-B, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressing, red/silver label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features the brilliant Antonio Janigro in a triptych of magnificent cello concerto performances, all recorded with his crack chamber ensemble, Solisti di Zagreb.
Note: I have it on good authority that this particular cover was the first issue of this recording in Germany – later editions of the jacket had the familiar black "speakers" band at the top. Curiously, although this is the first cover, I believe this is the second label, though still an early red/silver issue.
This is exalted music-making by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the cello will find Janigro's playing richly rewarding. Janigro is an artist richly deserving of systematic re-issue and renewed appreciation on disc – this is superb!
Included are the following works:
Luigi Boccherini: Cello Concerto in B-flat Major G. 482 (in the arrangement by Friedrich Grutzmacher)
Antonio Vivaldi: Cello Concerto in D Major
Johann Ernst von Sachsen-Weimar: Cello Concerto in G Major
Incidentally, the charming cover photo of Janigro was taken by David Hecht. The fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in German and English, were written by Louis Biancolli.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the glossy jacket is VERY GOOD. There is edgewear, bumping at corners, mild ringwear, and general aging. However, there are no seamsplits or owners' markings, and whole remains solid, bright, and attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
