This handsome LP – a still-sealed copy, quite rare – from Chandos (ABRD 1319, German pressing, label iteration unknown – presumably blue label, DDD stereo) features conductor Neemi Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra’s powerful rendition of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor Op. 93, vividly recorded at Caird Hall, Dundee on 12 May 1988.
Jarvi’s is a towering reading and can be spoken of in the same breath as those by Karajan, Mravinsky, Haitink, Ormandy, et al. And, arguably, this Chandos issue boasts the finest sonics, well surpassing all rivals.

This album was produced by Brian Couzens and engineered by Ralph Couzens and Janet Middlebrook. The jacket design was executed by Jane Embley while the art direction was supervised by Vicky Langdale. The front cover reproduces a detail from Liubov Popova’s painting “Power in Space”, while the photograph of Shostakovich was supplied by the Society of Cultural Relations with the USSR, London. The reverse side of the jacket carries expert liner notes by Jeremy Siepmann, provided in English only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears virtually as new – an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
