A –Jawbreaker Split B –Samiam Head Trap Recorded By – Bart*Jawbreaker was an American punk rock band active from 1986 to 1996 and considered one of the most influential acts of the early-1990s emo movement. Lead vocalist and guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach, bassist Chris Bauermeister, and drummer Adam Pfahler formed the band while students at New York University, later relocating to Los Angeles where they released their debut album Unfun (1990) throughindependent record label Shredder Records. Relocating again to San Francisco the following year, they released 1992's Bivouac through the Tupelo Recording Company and The Communion Label. Schwarzenbach's charisma and personal, frustrated lyrics helped to establish him as a cult idol, even as he underwent surgery to remove painful and voice-threatening polyps from his throat. Jawbreaker toured with Nirvana in 1993 and released 24 Hour Revenge Therapy in 1994, attracting the attention of major labels. They signed a $1 million contract with DGC Records and released 1995's Dear You, but the album's polished production and smooth vocals resulted in a significant backlash from the band's core audience. Internal tensions led to Jawbreaker's dissolution in 1996. Following the breakup, the members of Jawbreaker were active in other projects including Jets to Brazil and Whysall Lane. Pfahler continued to issue previously-recorded Jawbreaker material through his Blackball Records label, and public interest in the band continued due in part to nationally-charting pop punk and emo acts openly indebted to Jawbreaker's sound. In 2004 Pfahler licensed the out-of-print Dear You from DGC's parent company Geffen Records and re-released it to positive response. He has since issued a remastered version of Unfun, and plans to remaster the rest of the band's catalog. In 2007 Jawbreaker briefly reunited in the studio during the recording of a documentary film about the band, but rumors of a full reunion have repeatedly been dispelled by the members and the film has no projected release date.
Samiam is a punk/emo band from Berkeley, California, active since 1988.
Formation and early years
Samiam was formed in late 1988 after the breakup of the Gilman club mainstay Isocracy. Their first show was in January 1989 with Christ on Parade. They released records through New Red Archives and Hopeless Records in the US and Burning Heart Records in Europe. In the mid-'90s, the band had two releases on major labels, Atlantic Records in 1994 and Ignition/Tommy Boy in 1997. This path achieved modest mainstream success; a video for "Capsized" gained a lot of airplay on MTV, they performed on The Jon Stewart Show in 1994 and the single "She Found You" garnered considerable radio play in 1998. The band toured extensively throughout Europe, North America, and Japan with Bad Religion, Green Day, The Toadies, Sense Field, blink-182, and Millencolin.
Later years
In late 2000, the band quietly ceased after supporting the Astray album. Despite what was initially to be a breakup, they continued to tour abroad yearly (Europe three times, and South America) with occasional shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This led to the recording of the band's 7th album, "Whatever's Got You Down" in 2006. Samiam toured Europe 3 more times in 2006 and 2007 and played various US dates in 2008.
Samiam toured Australia in September 2009, together with the band A Death in the Family. This was followed by eight shows in Gainesville, Florida in November 2009 and single shows in Santiago, Chile, San Miguel and Buenos Aires, Argentina and São Paulo, Brazil in December 2009. October 2010 brought them together again with A Death in the Family for a European and East Coast tour.
Samiam released Trips, their first album in 5 years, on September 6, 2011.
