Rare HERBIE HANCOCK, "Takin' Off" original Blue Note 4109 pressing LP. Blue Note Records BLP 4109 (Mono). Blue and White, New York address label with "VAN GELDER" & Ear mark in Deadwax. NM/EX. This LP came from a collection once owned by local Seattle area Jazz DJ and like nearly all of his LPs was rarely played if at all! TAKIN' OFF was Herbie Hancock's first album as a leader. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on May 28, 1962. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather. If TAKIN' OFF, Herbie Hancock's first session as a leader, is remembered for nothing else, it will be for the biggest soul jazz hit ever written, the phenomenally popular "Watermelon Man." Hancock's funky little tune launched a boom in jazz that combined the syncopated backbeats of soul and R&B with the improvisation of jazz. The rest of TAKIN' OFF, featuring Blue Note regulars Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins, is a masterful example of the highly creative jazz that was Hancock's forte at the time. TAKIN' OFF belongs in every serious jazz collection, highly recommended for jazz aficionados. Really amazing album, another great find!
