Description
A piece of movie history - and record history. "The Jazz Singer" 1927 Original Vitaphone disc. "Exit Music" / "Exit March"- This 12-inch, one-sided disc was recorded by Warner Bros. Vitaphone Orchestra, separate from the sound-track of the film itself, and was used following the end of the movie to provide music while the audience left the theater. This rare disc is still with its original Vitaphone sleeve, with the Vitasphone disc number in the upper corner. The sleeve's paper-tape seal is still on the sleeve, advising theater managers and projectionists that "All used, unused and broken records must be returned express prepaid to The Vitaphone Corp. branch. . . a charge of $5.00 will be made for each record not returned" (See photo - The studio meant to maintain complete control of their product - and $5. was quite a sum in 1927, greatly encouraging theaters to return discs after used. . even broken records!!) The small orange piece at the record's spindle hole was a round paper seal, which indicated a new record until until the seal was broken by playing the record. This 12-inch disc was recorded at 33-1/3 rpm, and plays from the inside out - operators started the needle at the inner-most groove and it played outward. (a regular 78rpm needle/stylus plays the grooves) . . a very early use of the 33-1/3 speed. The record is in excellent condition. Has a couple of scratches that have little effect on the superbly recorded disc with magnificent sound for the period (recorded with Western Electric process). Rubber stamped on the sleeve is "Store Flat To Avoid Warping" (something we'd never do today). Media Mail is $7.50, and not any differing amount that may erroneously appear within this listing. Postage extra outside U.S. - Europe is $30.00 Please wait for my invoice before paying. . . see also: other records (including another Vitaphone), jazz, jazz/blues advertising, musical paper items, etc., as well as additional items to be added in coming days.
