Handmade version of 100 from 2009.
Fingers Keepers proudly declare that they’re giving us the French Joe Meek with this release. As ever with these guys, though, what they’ve got is inevitably more interesting than any English-language counterparts you’d cross-reference; other touchstones include Italian shlock-scorers Goblin and a sound best wrapped up as “horror music”. Indeed, almost all of these 18 tracks could fit on any wigged-out B-movie OST. Visitors’ Visitors is space-exploration- gone-astray; Chico Magnetic Band’s Pop Or Not sees schlep’n’tickle getting outrageously sex pested; Les Maledictus Sound run the voodoo down on Inside My Brain: a dangerously fuzzed-up spy theme.
See a pattern? Well, Massiera seems to have spent most of his recording life careening around Canada and Europe, holed up in self-kitted-out studios such as Studio D’Enregistrement Mediterranean (from which we get SEM Studios’ underwater Spaghetti surf, Ivresse Des Profondeurs) and, if pictures can be believed, getting out of his gourd on booze. He welded disparate genres together as only true musical madmen can, flinging them out under zillions of aliases or self-helmed ensemble groups. This compilation takes us up to 1972, bringing us the best of his early years as a psych warrior. With true dedication to the cause, FK promise to bring us part two later in the year. Hinted at here with Hermans Rocket’s Space Woman, JPM takes it to the intergalactic disco dancefloor.
