Recorded at LA's recently shuttered ETA, 'The Way Out of Easy' is a celebration of iconic guitarist Jeff Parker's seven year residency alongside Anna Butterss, Jay Bellerose and Josh Johnson, touching on the weekly sessions' transcendent, groove-fwd hybridity with canny nods to post-rock, kosmische, hip-hop and dub.

For decades at this point, Parker has been restlessly innovating both as a soloist and a keen collaborator, working with formative post-rock outfits like Isotope 217 and Tortoise, legendary jazz ensemble Chicago Underground, and alongside artists as stylistically diverse as Kevin Drumm, Hamid Drake and Matana Roberts. And although he's still best known for his role in the Chicago scene, he's been based in Los Angeles for years at this point, where, since 2016, he's steadily built up a reputation for Monday night jams at ETA straddled by bassist Butterss, drummer Bellerose and horn player Johnson. 'The Way Out of Easy' was recorded live in January last year, just a few months before the venue was forced to close, and captures the IVtet's loose-limbed, improvisational magic perfectly. The night started as a low-key affair, but by the time this session rolled around, the EVA IVtet had become a local staple, packed to the gills each week. And Parker and his crew kept it focused, playing retooled originals, freeform jams and spirited covers to bring the crowd into the mindset Parker cultivated over the years at Chicago's Rodan.

He kicks off the set with an oversized redux of his 2012 composition 'Freakadelic', that's stretched from five minutes to almost 25, stripped of some of its bluster and given fresh, mantra-like phrases and a disarmingly casual groove. When the initial loping, downtempo snap that characterized the original falls away, the improvisation gains its footing as the IVtet look skywards, with Parker rhythmically twanging harmonic arpeggios over tape-woozed organ waves and Butterss' propulsive bassline. Comparatively, 'Late Autumn' shows the band's softer side, touching on celestial, beatless post-rock at first and picking up steam when Bellerose's muted percussion emerges in the second half. Evolving like a mantra, this one nestles between 'TNT'-era Tortoise and Can at their most horizontal, with Parker's sampled guitars sculpted into hazy shimmers. But it's 'Chrome Dome' that's most surprising; the IVtet would routinely finish their weekly shows with a standard or a cover (like Burt Bacharach's 'The Guy's in Love with You', for example), and they reclaim that energy with a dubwise jam that was developed spontaneously from Johnson's solo sax improvisations.

Each member does serious heavy lifting here: the rhythm section set the scene with the expected bass weight and familiar groove, and Parker elevates Johnson's lyrical wails with matted twangs that slowly drop away to reveal an arsenal of psychedelic effects in the groggy final third.
