TAKES OFF

1S / 2S PRESSING
of Rare "VERSION 2" sequencing with original, not yet deleted, lyrics.

RCA Victor Records LSP 3584 <> Stereo <> Released in 1966 <> Deep Groove Black Label

COVER: MINT ~a word, very rarely used by me, especially to describe a cover; this one is still in the (opened) shrink-wrap. Plastic is 100% intact with no rips or peel-back. Underneath, the cover is pristine, with no feathering, dents, creases or nicks. All edges are straight and crisp. All seams and spine 100% intact with no wear or splits. All corners sharp.

VINYL: NM ~The still very glossy vinyl is thick, solid, utterly flat and sounds incredibly brilliant and BOLD! There are no background tics on this one. In bright, direct light I can see one surface line (as a sheen only) per side. Whether this is in the pressing, a rub from a spindle or cover corner, etc., I can't tell. It is only a light surface sheen and does not mar the grooves (I've used a magnifying glass to see.) Both are inaudible. There are NO scratches. The silver on black, deep groove, white dog labels are rich and clean with no wear or marks.

MATRIX #'s: TPRS-0173-1-1S and TPRS-0174-2S

STRICT, CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE Ratings

This is the extremely rare 2nd version of the LP. The standard running order of Five songs on Side 1 and Six songs on Side 2; but, as followers of these pressings are well aware, there are different LYRICS here than in the "cleaned-up" final, Version 3 that RCA Victor ultimately decided on. All of this took place in 1966. Even the FIRST PRESSING of the 3rd version was made in 1966.

As to the lyric differences: on LET ME IN, Marty can clearly be heard singing: "Don't tell me you want money" rather than "Don't tell me It's so funny" and on RUN AROUND he can, again clearly, be heard singing: "That sway as you lay under me" rather than "That sway as you stay here by me". By today's standards, those deleted, first lyrics that RCA execs found to be "questionable" would pass through without even causing a raised eyebrow. But in early 1966, it was thought to be too much for the youth of America to be exposed to. Of course from here on in, they would have Gracie to deal with ~and that's Instant Karma In Action folks! They learned, pretty fast, not even to try to mess with her.

A liittle piece of psychedelic '60s cultural history, a superb pressing of a very rare record that just happens to be a phenomenal album, one that led a major shift in American popular music. The folkies could no longer hold their noses up in the air at the electrified juice. It just tasted too darn good, done like this.

As hard as this record is to find in this version; it is especially hard to find in stereo and it is incredibally rare to find (either stereo or the more common mono) in such clean condition as this specimen. This is the collection keeper. We needn't discuss the GoldMine list price ($,000) on this and I also won't put a reserve on it. (I must be nuts, but, if I can't hold on to my principals, I might as well cut my hair and get a real job.)

I have been asked about the MATRIX #'s on this LP regarding SIDE 2. It turns out I had made a small TYPO! The FULL Matrix # for that side is: TPRS - - 0174 - - 2S. (the difference is 2 extra dashes.) I was told to look for this and I am glad to say it is the case.

ALSO: Regarding the LABEL Photo: It appears in this image that the "L" in AIRPLANE is worn. I re-checked and the label print is 100% SOLID, STRONG SILVER throughout with NO wear! That "L" is complete and NOT worn. (Must have been a light factor in my photo-shoot)
