Description
This is an amazing set of the Library of Congress original recordings from 1948. Jelly Roll sat down and made these recordings in the late '40's, which were sold in installments, by subscription. Well-heeled jazz enthusiasts applied to Circle Sound Inc., 38 East 4th Street, New York, for the “The Saga of Mr. Jelly Lord” and received 45 dark Vinylite twelve-inch records arranged in 12 albums. Beginning August—September 1947 two albums were issued every three months until the set was complete. The albums, which housed the Vinylite records contain 3 or more often 4 records in each, for a total of 45 records.
According to contemporary sources only about 300 sets were sold, although it appears now to be at least 322 sets. Given the original subscription fee of $120.00 and the small number of sets sold, makes them a priceless rarity today.
This is set #280 and is complete. Amazing condition! The album covers are a bit worn, but inside, the paper sleeves holding the 78's are pristine. Most (about 90%) appear to be unplayed. I would guess that most have never been removed from the paper sleeves. On the ones that have been played, they are still flawless, without any marks or distractions. Probably one of the best sets in existance... you will be pleased with this set! I suspect that the original buyer lost interest after a few records and just put them on the shelf. The albums are definately shelf worn, but the insides are gold. I have the buy it now price at what I paid for this set.
