Description

Up for sale we have an original unpublished production-used script of Lions Love written by Agnes Varda where Jim Morrison plays the lead actor. In the movie he was supposed to play himself but turned down the role last minute for reasons unknown, though he visited the production during filming and can be seen in the opening scene. Full provenance from Agnes Varda's office and from the bookshop in Paris where this article came from will be provided to the winning bidder.

As per this script Jim Morrison takes second billing (picture 2 in this listing from this script) behind VIVA (Anda Warhol fame).

Jim Morrison's role in the script is highly autobiographical playing himself - "JIM". The script describes Morrison's frustration being a sex-symbol. There are personal views describing what film he would like to make and his poetry is often referenced. Stage directions for Jim Morrison are also repeatedly given. The script is very revealing and offers a first hand insight into how Morrison really feels. Agnes Varda (married to Jacques Demy) was one of Jim's closest friends towards the end of his short career and they would spend hours talking on the subject of film and fame. Varda was to be be one of the 5 mourners at Jim's funeral in 1971. It is only fitting that such an intimate and true portayal of Morrison can be written by his closest friend and confidant in this script.

A beautiful script and crazily rare. The content and subject matter never before seen in public (incl internet!) depicts the true man Morrison was. Agnes Varda herself will not talk about her friendship with Jim Morrison but it is all here in this script. Jim's intentions and frustrations. Fantastic. And all of this written on a typewriter and hand made for the production. The script is heavily used and inscribed by the production team. Parts are scored out. Amendments written in. Writing by the production team is both in French and English. This is the only script known to exist. Rosalie Varda (Jim Morrison came to her birthday party)  told me that I am very lucky to have this script as they do not have this on file or in their archives in Paris (this communication will be provided to the winning bidder). A beautifully crafted piece written in English by one of France's biggest directors of the new wave.

Jim Morrison did of course appear at the beginning of the film which depicts a scene from Michael McClure's play "The Beard".This scene is also in the script and the production team has noted "SHOT" for this scene.

"Interestingly, Jim was working with McClure on a screenplay version of "The Beard" around the time Jim filmed "Lions Love", but they would later abandon the project in favor of adapting McClure's novel "the Adept" instead. "Lions Love" was released in October 1969 and filmed earlier that same year (starting in February) in Los Angeles. The exact filming date for Jim's scene is unknown, but judging by his appearance, concert schedule, and work with McClure, I estimate the date to be around March or April 1969. Jim sits in the crowd wearing his olive green jacket, seated between Jacques Demy and Alain Ronay." (Source "The Doors Guide")

--->THE FILMMAKER'S DAUGHTER, I.E.THE SOURCE OF WHERE THIS ITEM CAME FROM HAS AUTENTICTED THE SCRIPT HERSELF which hardly ever happens in the collecting world. Normally third parties provide their opinion but you never know unless the actual person or family who created the item in the first place who is not involved in the sale or in it for their own interests says "YES IT IS REAL" IN WRITING. Of course in this case the Varda family have by authenticating  this one of a kind item confirmed that this is their property and cannot be used without permission from them.

A true eye-opener and probably one of the most honest depictions of Jim Morrison (the Poet - not the rockstar)
