Description
This album has been stored in a covered environment, in an upright position, for around 45 years. It is extremely rare and features 18 songs. A label placed on the front of the album reads, “This is the historic album featuring the original first recordings of America’s most exciting folk singer, the best of Joan Baez.” On the back of the cover it reads, “Original tapes recorded by Stephen Fassett in Boston, Mass., during May, 1959. This is album number ….…….of a limited edition of this high fidelity recording of Veritas Folksong series—1960—Vol. 1, No. 1.” In essence, this might actually be the first album produced featuring songs of Joan Baez.
Read further, “Seen in the hazy greenish spotlight of a local coffee house surrounded by an attentive following, the lovely Joan Baez looks, for all her eighteen years, like a priestess at some ancient rite. Possessing a rich, soaring voice, her control of volume exerts a dramatic effect on her audience, often leaving them quite breathless. Of Mexican-Irish ancestry, Joan had come to New England only recently from her native California to attend Boston University. She was immediately drawn into the local folksong circuits and, within a few months, had become the most popular performer in the area. Her unusually expressive voice and intuitive musicianship have immediate impact. This is an undeniable talent. As this is being written offers from leading recording companies are already pouring in.”
Although I am not a professional record collector, I consider this album to be in very good shape considering it is already 45 years old. There is a 2" split in the top seam otherwise the album is intact. There is no writing on either side of the cover. However, it does have a small watermark on the front in the upper left corner (about the size of a quarter) and on the back side around the edge of the upper right corner (see picture). The vinyl itself has a few surface marks/scratches; nothing that can be felt. I do not have a record player so I am unable to play it or guarantee it but I would not list this record unless I thought someone would be happy with it.
