Up for sale is an exceptionally rare 78 RPM, 10 inch, shellac single record with two excellent popular waltzes (each with vocalist).  Of particular interest is the love theme song from Director Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail, the 1930 movie which was actor John Wayne's first leading role!

Underneath the name "Brunswick" on the labels is the wording "Panatrope with Radio - Radio - Records".  At the bottom of the labels appears the wording:  "The Brunswick- Balke-Collender Company".   In April, 1930, this company sold Brunswick Records to Warner Brothers.  Online discographies indicate that Brunswick # 4978 (the record I am selling) dates to November 5, 1930.  The labels make no mention of Warner Brothers, however.
The Big Trail was filmed between April and August, 1930 and had a general release in October, 1930.  It was a very large budget (over $ 2M) film that was shot in both a 35 mm and a 70 mm version.  Director Raoul Walsh "discovered" prop mover and previous bit actor Marion Morrison and cast him in the lead, changing his stage name to John Wayne.  The Big Trail was a commercial failure, in large measure because very few movie theaters were able to screen the 70 mm version, which has subsequently been highly praised by film critics.  During most of the 1930s, Wayne would generally appear in low budget "poverty row" or "B" westerns.  It was not until his second big breakthrough, in John Ford's 1939 Stagecoach, that "The Duke" would become an enduring national movie star.   Song of The Big Trail is the musical centerpiece of the movie.  The melody is played during the scenes between Breck Coleman (played by Wayne) and his love interest Ruth Cameron (played by Marguerite Churchill).  A rousing version of the entire song concludes the movie when Coleman and Cameron are happily reunited.  It is a lovely song with a memorable melody, as might be expected from James F. Hanley, who is known for such standards as (Back Home Again in) Indiana, Second Hand Rose, and Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart.
SPECIAL NOTE:  The record I am selling (Brunswick 4978) features Joe Green and His Orchestra.  The vocalists are not credited.  This is a different recording of Song of the Big Trail than appears on Victor 22548 (which was done by Leroy Shield, with vocals by Bud Jamison).  Both versions appeared in 1930.
Joe Green was a jazz percussionist (drummer, vibraphonist, and xylophonist).  His brother George Hamilton Green also excelled in these instruments.  Green recorded under many different aliases starting in about 1918 and continuing until at least the late 1940s.
