Description

This is an authentic original 1972 US stereo first pressing of saxophonist Joe Henderson's progressive spiritual jazz and jazz-rock fusion album "Black Is the Color," released on Milestone Records [Joe Henderson – Black Is The Color – Vinyl (LP, Album), 1972 [r393608] | Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/393608-Joe-Henderson-Black-Is-The-Color "Joe Henderson Black Is the Color Release").

The deadwax runout configurations cleanly show the hand-etched matrix serial "MSP 9040A-1" alongside a hand-scribed "Ⓟ1972 AUDIOFIDELITY" copyright layout string and the distinct "SON" signature code [Joe Henderson – Black Is The Color – Vinyl (LP, Album, Stereo), 1972 ...](https://www.discogs.com/release/5483804-Joe-Henderson-Black-Is-The-Color "Joe Henderson Black Is the Color Deadwax Details"). This confirms a verified early manufacturing press assignment from Sonic Recording Products out of Holbrook, New York. The heavy disc features the standard solid yellow-and-brown Milestone label alignment with the iconic center split "M" block graphic.

The vinyl comes housed inside its original gatefold jacket, showcasing vibrant abstract line artwork on the dark front cover, coupled with neon green background panel blocks across the inner sleeve layout detailing production notes by Orrin Keepnews [Joe Henderson – Black Is The Color – Vinyl (LP, Album), 1972 [r393608] | Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/393608-Joe-Henderson-Black-Is-The-Color "Joe Henderson Black Is the Color Gatefold Details"). Musically, this album is a highly experimental tour de force, notable for its innovative use of 16-track tape overdubbing layers over improvisational post-bop foundation sessions [Joe Henderson – Black Is The Color – Vinyl (LP, Album), 1972 [r393608] | Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/393608-Joe-Henderson-Black-Is-The-Color "Joe Henderson Black Is the Color Credits"). The album features a legendary supporting ensemble consisting of Jack DeJohnette, Ron Carter, Dave Holland, George Cables, and Airto Moreira [Joe Henderson – In Pursuit Of Blackness / Black Is The Color – CD (Compilation, Remastered), 1998 [r4894493] | Discogs](https://www.discogs.com/release/4894493-Joe-Henderson-In-Pursuit-Of-Blackness-Black-Is-The-Color "Joe Henderson Black Is the Color Personnel").
