AMAZING!
Few composers in any age have been as innovative as John Cage. (And few records are as rare.)
This is a very special 2LP set from Tomato Records, that features Cage SONATAS AND INTERLUDES for Prepared Piano, and A BOOK OF MUSIC, its very first recording, here played by pianists Joshua Pierce and Maro Ajemian.
Note, if you are unfamiliar, that Cage here re-invents the piano sound board by riveting screws and bolts within to change its very aspect. (Like Partch, he needs a different tonal scale.)
Of note, too, is that this set is one of the only existing recordings of any musicians anywhere willing to take on the works…the SONATAS AND INTERLUDES amounting to some 19 pieces alone.
Helpful in understanding the make-up of such music, is this quote from the composer:
“Percussion music is a contemporary transition from keyboard influenced music to the all-sound music of the future. A bolt or large wood screw inserted between two strings was the answer [for me]. This changed every aspect of the sound. The piano had become, in effect, a percussion or orchestra under the control of a single player.”
An extraordinary experience, here in a very fine edition: Cover like new (note a punch hole), with 2LPs that will play near mint.
Not to be missed, especially if you are a musical adventurer.

Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
