Description

Americana-- John Cage: First Construction In Metal (1937 for metal percussion instruments) / Edgard Varese: Ionisation (1931 for 37 percussion instruments) / Carlos Chavez: Tambuco (1964 for percussion); Toccata (1942 for percussion)

Philips prospective 21e siecle 6526 017 France undated LP Vinyl: vg+ (some light marks, plays with occasional light surface noise)
Cover: vg+ (small writing and sticker on back; minor wrinkles) Original beautiful reflective silver cover issue of this scarce 60s or 70s lp with Les Percussions de Strasbourg performing essential experimental percussion pieces by 20th century American composers. While working on his First Construction, Cage wrote, "Percussion music is revolution... Experiment must be carried out by hitting anything -- tin pans, rice bowls, iron pipes -- anything we can lay our hands on. Not only hitting, but rubbing, smashing, making sound in every possible way..." Cage's piece was written for an eccentric array of exclusively metal percussion including gamelans, sheets of iron, and automobile brake parts. Ionisation is Varese's landmark, genre-pioneering noise composition, considered the 2nd percussion-only composition in the entire history of western music; its instrumentation includes 2 sirens and several Cuban and Chinese devices, and here it is performed in a special composer-approved version for 6 performers (it was originally composed for 13). This record is part of the great Philips silver series of experimental music that issued legendary recordings by Francois Bayle, Bernard Parmegiani, Iannis Xenakis, Dubravko Detoni, Luc Ferrari, Pierre Henry, etc.

Chavez was a Mexican composer who associated with Edgard Varese and Aaron Copeland. Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, Lou Harrison, Lejaren Hiller, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Varese studied under under d'Indy, Roussel, Widor, Debussy and Rolland, and was an associate of Richard Strauss, Erik Satie, Alban Berg, Henry Cowell, Anton Webern, Igor Stravinsky, Charles Ives, John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Pierre Schaeffer.
