Original pressing of this visionary album combining psychedelic droning keyboard and saxophone solos, proto hip hop funk and rock beats, and electronic processing. The flanged out, heavily reverbed syncopated funk drumming on the stunning 9 minute title track and 11 minute "Ides Of March" sound eerily like the time-stretched Amen breaks of drum and bass music 30 years later - or at least like some kind of lost David Axelrod session. The shorter "The Soul Of Patrick Lee", the lone vocal track and the only one on which Riley doesn't share compositional credit, resides more in an acid-folk universe, with words by Cale sung by Adam Miller, while "The Hall of Mirrors in the Palace at Versailles" features piano and saxophone ambiance without the drums, still with heavy electronic processing but a proto-new age feel. Neither artist ever sounded quite like this album before or since but the collaboration between the avant garde classically educated rocker-producer and the Indian-influenced pioneer of minimalism and live electronic music works perfectly. With John Cale on production, bass, guitar, harpsichord, piano, organ, and viola, Riley on piano, organ, and saxophone, and drums by Bobby Colomby (of Blood, Sweat & Tears) and Bobby Gregg (session drummer for Bob Dylan, Esther Phillips, Paul Simon, etc.). Highly recommended!

artist info from album notes etc.:
British avant rock multi-instrumentalist and producer Cale studied composition with Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, worked with John Cage, Brian Eno, Bobby Neuwirth, Andy Warhol, and Walter De Maria, and was a member of several groups including the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed and Angus MacLise, LaMonte Young's Fluxus-associated Theatre of Eternal Music aka the Dream Syndicate with Terry Jennings, Marian Zazeela, Tony Conrad, Billy Name, Jon Hassell, and Alex Dea, and the Primitives; as a highly influential producer Cale has worked with the Stooges, Nico, Patti Smith, the Modern Lovers, Squeeze, and many others to craft the beginnings of punk, noise, and new wave. • Terry Riley was influenced by John Coltrane and John Cage, pioneered realtime tape-delay feedback systems, collaborated with Pandit Pran Nath, John Cale of the Velvet Underground, and Brian Eno, and is associated with the late 20th century 'minimalism' movement along with Philip Glass, classmate La Monte Young, John Adams, Steve Reich, Charlemagne Palestine, Phil Niblock, and Tony Conrad.
