Description
As part of this year’s John Coltrane 100 campaign – the Coltrane Estate’s year-long centennial celebration – Impulse! Records is reissuing Ascension in an audiophile double LP edition: and it’s one of the most significant JC 100 reissues yet.
Originally released in 1966, Ascension remains one of the saxophonist’s most important, radical and influential works. Essentially, his career can be divided into two halves – the progressive but conventionally-structured hard bop he played before Ascension, and the looser, freer jazz made after it; he would spend the rest of his life with his feet firmly planted in the avant-garde.
On 28 June, 1965, Coltrane and Impulse! producer Bob Thiele convened an expanded ensemble – alongside Trane’s tenor saxophone are trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson; fellow saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown, John Tchicai, and Archie Shepp; pianist McCoy Tyner; bassists Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison; and drummer Elvin Jones.
This new version (released 19th June 2026) of Ascension is part of the Verve Vault series, with audio mastered by Ryan K Smith – one of the world’s best cutting engineers, who’s done an excellent job here – from the original stereo analogue tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal in Germany.
