John Coltrane -
BLUE TRAIN -
Blue Note BST-81577 -
Special DMM Teldec Audiophile Pressing of ST-46095 -
STUNNING!
Without question, this album is a monument to the burgeoning talent that was John Coltrane. Among those who know the entire discography, this and GIANT STEPS are THE records to cherish, for their brilliance, ensemble playing, and incredible and imaginative invention. In the words of music critic Lindsay Planer:
"Although never formally signed, an oral agreement between John Coltrane and Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion was indeed honored on Blue Train -- Coltrane's only collection of sides as a principal artist for the venerable label. The disc is packed solid with sonic evidence of Coltrane's innate leadership abilities. He not only addresses the tunes at hand, but also simultaneously reinvents himself as a multifaceted interpreter of both hard bop as well as sensitive balladry -- touching upon all forms in between."
Is this LP a landmark in jazz? Lindsay Planer concludes with:
"Without reservation, Blue Train can easily be considered in and among the most important and influential entries not only of John Coltrane's career, but of the entire genre of jazz music as well."
This copy is the 1984 DMM Teldec pressing of the original and is in very fine shape: Cover is without fault, still in shrink; record inside plays near mint.
A wonderful jazz prize, beautifully pressed.

Shipping and handling is $5 for up to 5 LPs shipped within the States. Internationally, $14 via airmail for the first LP, $4 each thereafter. (Canada is half that.) Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
