John Coltrane Giant Steps original black label

You are looking at an original black label mono first 1311 pressing of the classic from John Coltrane that’s needs no introduction.

A few words about me. I am a passionate jazz record collector and not a dealer in any way. I only pass on a record when I already have an identical copy of a LP.

I recently bought a lot of wonderful and rare albums and this one was in the box. As I already have this one on the black label, I am passing hopefully this one to another passionate collector.

I do not believe in visual or 20 second sampling grading. I play the entire record on my Thorens with no filters on the amp at least twice and take notes if there are any issues.

This 52 year old record has its original shine with light scuffs and a few surface scratches that are very light. When I got this record It was in a very old paper innersleeve that I replaced with a new audiophile one.

I did not wash or have a VPI cleaner but believe this record is an ideal candidate for a full clean that I will leave up to the future owner.

Sound: I own a few copies of this LP and let me say that IMHO, the sonics of the black label are far superior by far to any of the later pressings (Bullseye, Japanese……). Coltrane seems to be playing in my living room!

The sonics of this copy are wonderfully alive and vibrant with no distortion spots on my system ( my thornens tracks at 1.3g).

I am calling this album a VG+ as on two tracks I did notice very light crackle that is far from over bearing during the bass solo on Syeeda`s song and on Naima.

Also there are 2 or 3 very light pops here and there but rare and never overbearing . Again with a VPI clean I honestly think this could be improved.

The cover is beautiful (it was in an old record store plastic bag that I am leaving it in) with no splits but a small name in light ink and the red corners are a bit rubbed. Maybe a bit of yellowing due to age.

 All in all a well taken care of 52 year old record!
