Description
For sale is this very scarce vintage vinyl LP of JOHN COLTRANE - MY FAVORITE THINGS on Atlantic Records 1961. This amazing copy is the French 1961 1st Mono Pressing of this iconic Jazz record. It features an alternate sleeve design to the U.S. and other early pressings with a laminated front with two flip-backs and a wonderfully weighty disc (208g) with beautiful orange and magenta labels. The catalogue number is Atlantic 332037. The matrices in the dead wax are hand etched as follows:
Side One - XCPI 332037A GF, Side Two - XCPI 332037B GF
Condition*:
The sleeve is graded VG+. The laminated front has light wear and a few small marks. There is only light wear to the corners, edges and spine. There are no tears or creases. There is a slight impression of the disc when it is held up to the light. The back which is unlaminated has some heavier marks and signs of handling. The text is clear and un-rubbed. Overall a reasonable sleeve.
The disc is graded Good (G). The first thing to say is that there is an ugly wide scuff/scratch on B1 (Summertime) that manifests as a noticeable click for around 3 minutes at a level which I found listenable through speakers but annoying on headphones. Fortunately the record plays through without skips. Otherwise the disc has been played through from start to finish and plays beautifully with occasional crackle and pop that do not mar the beauty of this stunning 1st pressing - but for the scratch I think it would probably be a safe EX. Apart from the awful looking scratch the disc is in great condition with only light surface marks visible under harsh light, the beautiful labels immaculate and the remarkable weight of the disc very satisfying. You'll have to make up your own mind whether you can love this very scarce record with its faults but for what it's worth I absolutely do and have listened to it with great enjoyment several times since it passed into my hands.
Thanks for looking! If this item interests you why not have a look at my other listings? This record is one of a number I was lucky to acquire recently, all from the archive of a single fastidious collector, many of which I will be listing in the coming days taking in Jazz, Blues and Folk including more Coltrane, Miles Davis and many others and several stunning rare 1st Pressings. Please feel free to make use of the "MAKE OFFER" button - I won't mind at all.
*Please note: Grading vinyl is a highly subjective thing. I am not a professional. I am just selling a small number of records. I can only give an honest appraisal based on careful visual inspection and thorough play testing. I do try to describe all significant faults and I certainly won't intentionally hide anything. Please read the description carefully, look at the pictures and make your own mind up. The grading scale I have used goes from G to NM with VG+ as par. In other words: Good (G), Very Good (VG), Very Good+ (VG+), Excellent (EX) and Near Mint (NM). Anything better than that would be Mint and would be listed as new. Anything worse than Good I probably wouldn't be selling.
