description:
Scarce private pressing of the premiere performance of this unique work about the French revolution. The orchestra is separated into microtuned groups, and the electronic instrument (not specified but probably a Syn-Ket or Moog) is tuned using just intonation; Eaton uses the conflict of the different tunings to highlight Robespierre's moral descent into a dissonance of mind and spirit, with Robespierre's singing falling more and more out of tune "like a man losing control of his mind and soul." Here it's performed at the Indiana University Opera Theater under conductor Thomas Baldner and chorus masters Alan Harler, Jan Harrington, and Lawrence Weller, with a cast of over 250 people and an orchestra of over 120 players. The recording was supervised by Eaton and includes his notes as well as the complete libretto booklet by Patrick Creagh.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Eaton studied under Milton Babbitt, Edward Cone, and Roger Sessions, worked with Gunther Schuller and Zubin Mehta, and was among the first composers to work with early synthesizers, especially the Syn-ket and the Moog; he is known for his experiments in microtonal pitch relationships and contemporary opera, and is credited with giving in 1965 the first ever public performance using a synthesizer. Should be of interest to fans of microtonal composers like Harry Partch, Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Easley Blackwood, Glenn Branca, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, Alois Haba, Julian Carrillo, Emil Richards, Joe Maneri, Teo Macero, James Tenney, Rhys Chatham, and Tony Conrad.
