When the average Beatles fan who's delved into the more esoteric regions of Beatles-related projects encounters this artifact, the general by-line or musical point of relation given is that this is essentially an album-length reflection of a Revolution 9 style idea of experimentation.
Of the three experimental records that Lennon and Ono created during the late 1960's, this one, their first, is by far the most fully developed and the most interesting. Lennon later claimed to have made this entire album in one late-night session ending at dawn. If that is true, then this is quite an accomplishment to have taken place in a matter of hours especially when one considers the primitive, homemade techniques that were used to make the album.
In terms of content, the record is remarkably musical in tone - far more so than the other experimental albums John and Yoko made together. Twisted melodies are whistled or plunked on a piano or implied in walls of guitar feedback all emerging from a persistent, droning (and possibly unintentional) buzz. Clicking sounds keep a sort of tempo throughout most of the album and there is plenty of John and Yoko's good-humored chatter thrown in. Lennon mixes in some radio-sampled sound effects and Yoko screams and wails throughout much of the b-side.
In taming Yoko's screeching, John's primitive recording technique is to be commended. No matter how shrill Yoko's vocalizations become, Lennon manages to shave off all sounds above a certain frequency making for a hypnotic and monotonous sound. As a result the entire record occurs within a very controlled field of pitches and volumes so that even though the sounds are varied, they are seamlessly blended (think of other experimental records where you're constantly having to adjust the volume - not so here). This album has a very highly integrated sound all together. Proceeding from its own logic, it is a dense, cohesive unit with much to be admired.
Inevitably the eye-grabbing (or eye-closing, in some cases) cover art has attracted a lot of immature and negative publicity, basically exposing the hypocrisy of the "sex-sells" media. That hyprocrisy apparently still gives this record its bad reputation and most of its nay-sayers probably never even got past the cover. Still, if you want to belittle Lennon and Ono's experimental phase, then you should do so in terms of the content itself rather than by making cheapshots. Of course if you are satisfied with the seething edginess of your old Beatles records, if "I'll Follow The Sun" and "When I'm 64" are enough to blow your mind and if you still haven't heard "I Am The Walrus" so often as to become somewhat glazey-eyed by the thought of it, then you may want to sit this one out. On the other hand, if you're looking for something on another level or if you think that Lennon really stood for something artistically but you can't quite figure out what that was, then we may be onto something here.
