Baron Elmo Enterprises proudly presents a choice vinyl item from the enormous discography of musical deconstructionist JOHN ZORN: Archery, a double lp box set released in 1981 on John's own Parachute label in an edition of 1000 copies. This was one of the earliest Zorn releases, an astonishing bout of sound sculpture that sounded like nothing imaginable upon its release a quarter-century ago. Archery is one of the most celebrated of Zorn's game-based, free improvisation pieces, in which the overall structure of the work is determined by prearranged signals and cues. This was his first attempt at composing such a piece for a large ensemble. Starting with a group of twelve players and a prompter, he worked out every possible combination in duo and trio formats (for a total of 286), then organized the groupings in such a way that "no player was repeated in a series of four combinations." The rules and levels of this piece are far too complex to describe here in the detail they deserve… but basically the players move from one duo-trio combination to the next until a "divisi" is called by one of the musicians through the use of hand signals. At this point the players move to the chosen divisi system (there are twelve to choose from) through a process Zorn calls "melding." They run with the divisi in question until a player chooses to call the group back to where they left off in the sequence of duo/trio permutations. John explains all this in greater detail (illustrated with pages of his score) in his liner notes. The musicians who risked life and limb to make Archery a reality are Eugene Chadbourne (guitars, dobro), Bill Horvitz (electric guitar), George Lewis (trombone), Robert Dick (flutes), Wayne Horvitz (keyboards), Bill Laswell (bass), Anthony Coleman (keyboards), Tom Cora (cello) Polly Bradfield (violin), Mark Kramer (keyboards), and David Moss (percussion)… plus Zorn himself on alto sax, soprano sax and b-flat clarinet, with Mark Smith as the prompter. Your mind will be blown. Four lp-sized inserts are packed inside, crammed with information and arcana. Both records and the box show very slight wear, but this set looks great and plays beautifully.
