Description
This unique recording is John Zorn's tribute to and study of the Music of Ornette Coleman. 17 Ornette tunes are performed with a quintet of John Zorn and Tim Berne on alto saxophones, Mark Dresser on bass, and Joey Baron and Michael Vatcher on drums. Tight like Naked City, another of Zorn's bands of the time, the songs appear as short tracks on eleven track Side One, one to three minutes each, or as long tracks on six track Side Two, 2:28 to 4:45. They are more assured and assertive than Ornette's versions (insert tells which album each is from). Two altos and two drums form two tight pairs and most of the interest. Neither alto sounds much like Ornette while both drummers sound a good deal like Denardo Coleman on electric drums. A monster bash.
