Description
Here we have Johnny Cash’s first release on the prestigious SUN record label.
It’s “Hey Porter” and “Cry! Cry! Cry!” and he is accompanied by The Tennessee Two.
This is an early pressing, from 1955 featuring the all-important “push marks” under the label.
The numbers on the label are 221 (the issue number) and 150/1 (the matrix numbers).
In the wax on the A side, is a hand-written copy of the mx numbers, plus an all-important 72 which tells you where it was pressed, so I am told. There’s another number, which I think is a “control” number and it’s 5269.
The B side has a similar selection, plus a 72 and the control number 5270.
There are stickers on the labels, which are of the lick-and-stick variety so will easily come off with water. They are probably from the record being used on a juke box. I’ve left them there, because they’re a bit of history!
There are slight signs of juke box use around the run-out groove, but the record sounds FINE (as much as these early SUN pressings ever do.. Sam Phillips was a genius in the studio, but not such a genius when working the acetate/master-cutting lathe).
Condition-wise, I’ll very conservatively grade it as a very strong VG or a VG+.
There is a listing of this exact 1955 version on Mr “Diz” Kogz’s excellent site, and it can be identified by the “Tennessee Two” being in UPPER CASE and the numbers being issue on the left and matrix/master on the right.
I have read of Cash’s side-man Luther Perkins being described as “The most inept guitar player in the history of country music”.
Not while I’m alive, he isn’t.
Anyway, what would Cash have been without boom-chicka-boom?
Luther did exactly what was required of him, no more, and no less, and he made musical history.
