Description

Up for sale is a 10 inch 78 rpm shellac record with a terrific song about New York Yankee star baseball player, Joe DiMaggio.  It was issued in 1941 just a few weeks after "The Yankee Clipper" had set the record for most consecutive games with a base hit.  Joe's 56 game streak remains one of baseball's most hallowed records and stands to this day, almost 80 years later!

Record Label:  Okeh

Record Number: 6377 Artists:  Les Brown and his Orchestra with Vocal Chorus by Betty Bonney Year of Release:  1941
One side (31009) Joltin' Joe Di Maggio (Fox Trot; A. Cournoy - Homer) Wax matrix mark:  "31009" (stamped) and "1-A-" (stamped) and "4" (stamped) and "23" (stamped) [NOTE:  Joe's last name is spelled "Di Maggio" on this label, not "DiMaggio" as might be expected]
Other side (31006) The Nickel Serenade (The Coin Machine Song) (Fox Trot; Remark - Stanton - Sharbutt) Wax matrix mark:  "31006" (stamped) and "1" (stamped) and "2" (stamped) and "13" (stamped)
Early in the Di Maggio song, a male voice says "We need a hit so here I go".  This voice is not credited so I can't say for certain that it is Joe's.  It's certainly possible that he had a cameo part on this record.  The song was a big hit and has been revived periodically ever since, including in the Ken Burns documentary on Baseball.
Vocalist Betty Bonney was only 13 years old when she recorded these two sides.  Later, she would change her singing name to Judy Johnson.  In addition to singing with Les Brown, Bonney (Johnson) would also go on to sing with Frankie Carle, Jan Savitt, Jerry Wald, and Sammy Kaye.  During the 1950s, she appeared regularly on television including on Your Show of Shows and on Tonight! America After Dark, as well as on the game shows Hidden Treasure and Judge for Yourself.
